Did you use the shifter?
pull down to enter M mode.
pull to the right and down to go back to D mode.

To drive using temporary shift range selection, operate the “ -” or “ +” paddle shift switch. When the “ -” paddle shift switch is operated, the shift range switches to a range that enables engine braking force that is suitable to driving conditions. When the “ +” paddle shift switch is operated, the shift range switches to a range that is one range higher than the current range. Changing the shift range allows restriction of the highest gear, preventing unnecessary upshifting and enabling the level of engine braking force to be selected.

Automatic deactivation of shift range selection in the D position

Shift range selection in the D position will be deactivated in the following situations:
When the vehicle comes to a stop
If the accelerator pedal is depressed for more than a certain period of time
When the shift lever is moved to D again
When pressing and holding the “ +” paddle shift switch

What do you mean by "other car"? Perhaps a different brand with different protocols for the paddles and system feed-back? I did not follow your issue completely, but without permission, I'm posting a reply from a frequent and knowledgeable member when I had paddle questions before I took delivery of my LC.

When in D, you can manually choose your gear for a short period of time by using the paddle but remaining in D. Ex: crusing at 45mph in D the Trans is likely to be in 8th if in Normal mode (likely 5th or 6th if in S/S+). If you hit the downshift paddle, the car will put you immediately in 6th and you can then shift up or down from there. If you don't touch the paddle again, the car will revert to D after a period of 7-10 seconds. Alternatively you can hold the upshift paddle for 2 seconds and you will return to D.

Mx mode is entirely manual. If you are cruising at 45mph in M4, you will stay in 4 until you slow down enough for the computer to put you down to 3. If you are M4 and you approach a stop sign but forgot to downshift the car will automatically take you down to 3-2-1 as you stop, but it will only downshift when the computer senses that you've slowed down beyond the minimum speed for each gear.

Shfits using paddles in D are not as aggressive or as fast as when in proper M mode.
