Default Air Filters

Hey! Anyone use an aftermarket air filter in their LC? Pros vs Cons, which brand? Is it really worth it over OEM? I’m due for an oil change and was wondering should I swap out the OEM filters?

I'd stick with OEM if I were you. Or at least not a crappy racing filter (that allow too much dirt in), since your engine doesn't need any more air than the stock air filters provide. In fact, my ex-RC-F, with the same engine, just had one. My fear with aftermarket air filters is if they don't have a perfect fit, they'd allow dirt into your engine. And in my experience, they're not that expensive anymore. At least if bought from an OEM discount parts dealer.

i stick with factory OEM, the air flow sensors are set up that way,,interject new variable and its bound to cause problems.

I've been using Tom's filters, and haven't thrown any codes. Frankly, I haven't felt any difference (had them for the last 4 years).

doubt it will make any more power... but you could try K&N

K&Ns filter for crap; they're RACING filters. So if you care about your engine, just use OEM air filters. Besides, your engine does NOT need any more air than what it gets with OEM filters, so why compromise filtering ability? Makes no sense to me. You can look at independent tests to see how badly oiled cotton gauze filters do. So at least use dry air filters, but I always use OEM fiters, since they'll always fit perfectly, guaranteed. And they'll provide the right compromise of air flow and filtering ability. Oh, and ECU is tuned with that exact airflow.

Hardly anyone uses K&N filters as intended, they never buy the replacement oil and treat the filter. The entire concept is terrible, avoid.

Replaced the OEM filters today with the same OEM. Is any maintenance needed for the mesh filter built into the box? Seems like I remember some members replacing it on the GX460 forum.

Unpopular opinion: I removed those pre-filters inside the box for more airflow.

Based on the OEM stated purpose, I would absolutely NOT remove any of the

OEM air box related items.
