Default Rev Limit Discussion

Hello,

we all know that the torque converter unlocks at 6800 rpm, and therefore the car shifts slower. This leads me to prefer the stock rev limit settings.

RR prefers a higher rev limiter setting because it gives you additional time to shift, and it is apparently easier on the car not to hit the rev limiter.

Can you explain why it is safer to run a higher RPM than it is to hit the rev limiter at a lower RPM? I’m not debating the accuracy, I just don’t understand. In my mind, it would be safer to hit a rev limiter at 6800 than it would be to run the car up to 6900-7200 rpm. My tune came with the 7200 rpm limit. I prefer the stock setting, as it helps to shift while the torque converter is locked. I admit, I did slightly hit rev limit at the track when shifting with the stock tune, but my car shifts much faster doing that. Now that I’m tuned, if I accidentally go above 6800 rpm, it shifts slower. I can tell that my car does not like to rev that high.

When I got the tune Rafi recommend stock rev limit ...I think he only recommends raising it for those at the drag strip ...if you don’t like it I’m sure he can send you the tune file for stock rev limit give him a call

Yes they said they would. I’m more curious about my question above.

How can you tell your car doesnt like to rev that high?
And I'd assume you want to avoid torque converter lock up so you have less shock on the drivetrain between shifts.

It hesitated after 6800.

the car was designed to have a locked torque converter from 2-8. I’m sure the drivetrain can handle it.

If it's RR's contention that it's "apparently easier on the car not to hit the rev limiter" and/or "safer to run a higher RPM than it is to hit the rev limiter at a lower RPM...", would probably be best to direct your inquiry direct to Rafi or Simon.

I was one of the earliest adopters of the ecm tune, got mine back when unit needed to be removed from the vehicle. Rafi e-mailed that the 7200 option was available when then they still had my unit, and I decided to go with it. I've done my best times (12.09, 12.11 uncorrected) shifting "on the chime", which in my car still goes off @ 6800. The car doesn't seem to make more power above that point.

RR's always been responsive to it's customer's concerns, I'd wager they could lower your unit's limiter with a simple obd port input. Best to address issues with the limiter before making any radical gearing changes to your car.

sorry to bring up an old thread but has there been any advancements in the RR Tune or any mod to keep the torque converter locked past 6800rpm? or maybe a solenoid mod to trick it to stay locked?

I have Tuned by Loi. It keeps the torque converter locked above 6800, and shifts at 7200 rpm on a 7300 rpm redline in D.

Is there a link or site to get the tune? I just want a quicker trans shift. Do you have any mods done to your ISF? I currently only have the HKS axel back and Tom's filter and would like it tuned for 91 octane. Does he have multiple maps that i can switch out?
