Default Question RE: Headlight Ballast

hey everyone, my driver's side ballast/igniter may be bad. the dealer is saying i cannot just replace the ballast and that i will need an entire new headlight assembly, (aka $1430 + labor). is this correct?? i can't just buy the ballast separately and swap it out? i have an 09' btw.

i looked on the classifieds and people selling the headlight assembly usually stated that "bulbs and ballasts not included," which leads me to believe the ballast can be removed.

and if the ballast can be swapped out, anyone know the correct part number? thanks in advance.

Here’s a diagram, but interestingly the ballast/control module isn’t listed (looks like number 8/9 on the diagram).

Once you get the part number you can find a used ballast on eBay for a good price.

yeah, looks like No. 9, which doesn't have the option to purchase separately.

from what i'm seeing from the comments of people who bought the ballast separately from amazon, they had to remove the old ballast, then solder the wires and make modifications bc the replacement part wasn't true OEM.

You can buy the Denso ballast only and replace it without buying the whole lamp assembly. XenonDepot sells new Denso ballasts on their site and have an extra 20% sale going on now sitewide. Also, a couple of videos on Youtube how to take apart the connector to slip the wires through the lamp housing, The wires aren't soldered and connected by spade connectors I think. Hope this helps.

I have replaced a ballast before and it's not as difficult as you think.

you could just buy a used fully loaded headlight for $400.

the shop that replaced the bulb checked the car and it was NOT the ballast but a faulty bulb. whew, dodged an expensive bullet. they replaced it for free since it's been less than 2 years. but yes, i was going to just buy a used headlight assembly/housing off ebay if it was the ballast.

Was reading and no one said try the bulb.
In July was in the same boat, bought new oem ballasts but swapped bulbs side to side and the problem followed the bulb. Installed new bulbs. Fixed it....

Moral of the story is Mercury free D4S bulbs do not last 10 years like the old D2S bulbs....

Thankfully the ballast is no longer in the housing on the laster model 2IS....

Glad you're fixed...
