Default Question about headers

I've heard stories not that its going to stop me but I wanted to know if I change my stock headers could this hinder my Emission testing? Im in Northern VA and we have emission testing once every two years. Wanted to get some feed back if anyone has had problems in the past passing state required emissions with the headers changed out. I was looking to go PPE headers..

PPE has O2 sensor conditioners to prevent any CELs or codes so I'd imagine that would also prevent emissions testing issues, unless they physically check. In MD they just hook up OBD and done

They maybe true in Maryland but the O2 sims will not pass the readiness test here in Illinois.

So how did you correct the issue? Did you have to change out the headers when it was time to do the actual emissions or is there a way around it?

It is my understanding the PPE headers come with an o2 conditioner (not a simulator) and that they will pass the readiness test. But, as has been said, if there is a visual, headers will fail.

i have tried both the sikky sims and the O2 conditioner without success. I had to register my car in a family members house that doesn't have emissions. I hope you guys have better results. side note if you are getting a tune then you don't have to worry about any of this as they can turn on the readiness monitors via the tune and you will pass as long as no visual inspection is needed. I believe they cover this in the rr racing tune thread.

I also live in an area that requires a bi-annual emissions test. I had PPE headers & exhaust installed with their high flow aftermarket cats while retaining all 4 factory O2 sensors.

The day after the installation, I paid to have the car tested just to see if it still passed. It did. The test was just an OBD scan, not a "sniffer" test or visual inspection.

I read that WA state will eliminate emissions testing after 2020. I got PPE for my 2012 and from my understanding, will not require testing neither.

^^^^^^
Current Washington State law requires vehicles model year 2009 & newer to be California emission compliant to be registered in this state.

I'd bet the original poster wants his headers now, and to not have to relocate.

I believe that Washington state will stop the emissions testing as stated. They probably found that since the skill level of the testing personnel isn't very good, they decided that all they would do is look for the "check engine light".

I'm sure that in my area they wouldn't have the slightest idea what an "F" was.

I used to run my Ford truck through the test center without a catalytic converter, but tuned to run really well. I was always shocked at the low emissions. Hard to imagine what would have caused it to fail. I've been told by some smart people that all the catalyst does is clean up an overly rich mixture. If the fuel gets burned the catalyst does nothing.

The original poster lives in Virginia. And it appears she'd like to be emissions compliant. In 2016, not in 2020.

Yes, I agree that in our area many "wouldn't have the slightest idea".

So per service advisors in the biz they said that in VA they only do an inspection and should not fail me. The only way it should fail is if they vehicle has any warning lights on and with the conditioner that clears the codes it shouldnt fail... let hope lol ... oh and just cause Im a smart *** it wouldnt be HE'D like to know it would be SHE'D
