Default Question about Minimum Rotor thickness....

I'm about to replace my brake pads all around, and just wanted to double check the minimum thickness recommended before you have to replace the rotors.

When I had the recalls done on the car about two months ago I asked the tech to measure the rotor thickness for me front and back, here is what is written in my invoice:

"Front pads are at 7mm. Front rotors are at 29.9mm. Rear pads are at 4mm and rotors are at 27.2mm. Will need rear pads and rotors soon (5K miles or so)"

If I put on new pads all around do I need to change out the rotors also??

Thx guys

Whomever the tech is, he's an idiot or a thief. New thickness front is 30.0mm and you've only worn 5% of the rotor's service life. There is no way you will ever burn through a rotor in 5k miles even if you put Hawk blues on it.

27.2mm in the rear has only used 40% of it's service life. As little as these cars use the rear brakes, you could probably go another 50k without any worries at all.

No need to care much about pads, they will talk to you when it is time to change them long before they are at minimum thickness.

Yea wasn't too sure about that when he mentioned that I only had 5k left on I'm assuming the rear rotors and pads

Anyhow the car has almost 60K on the clock and I'm assuming the rear rotors haven't been replaced yet, and by what your calculations being only 40% worn then they should be good to over 100k without changing.

I'm only changing the pads because I can't stand the dust levels with my new wheels anymore! Anyhow I'll have some used OEM pads for sale as soon as I replace the pads.

Thx Lance

Minimum thickness Front - 28mm, Rear - 26mm
For $30 you can get a digital gauge for rotors and no one can screw with you.

Lightbulb

Assuming the rotors are OEM..

The hubs will have the Minimum Thickness engraved on them..

So again Front = 28 MM & Rear 26 = MM

Here is a live shot of a fresh band new rear "Made in Italy" OEM Brembo rotor

INSIZE is the brand of this one, I got it on EBay. They have few others, they all pretty much do the same thing.

If you are going to use a caliper, buy one like this:

Amazon.com: Anytime Tools Disc Brake Rotor Caliper Digital Electronic Gauge Gage Micrometer 0-2.5"/0.0005": Home Improvement Amazon.com: Anytime Tools Disc Brake Rotor Caliper Digital Electronic Gauge Gage Micrometer 0-2.5"/0.0005": Home Improvement

I use a micrometer, and I only use
Mitutoyo Mitutoyo
,
Fowler, Fowler,
or
Starrett. Starrett.
I don't trust the no name brands. That being said, I do have a full set 0 to 6" micrometers in a wooden box from a no name Chinese outfit. The are OK but I do not trust them for my most critical work.

I wouldn't wait until minimum thickness on the pads bcuz you'll end up needing to replace your brake sensors too if the pad gets too low. The sensors aren't very expensive but why pay money for parts you can preserve.

Default guages.

read the thickness of rotor in more than one spot.
check thicknesses side to side on same axle. great disparities could indicate a problem with calipers, master cylinder, proportioning valve or fluid.
