Default Solution for scrunched-in Intake Box outlet due to tight coupler fitting

Hi guys.

Some of you may have experienced the intake bending as a result of a tight coupler on the intake tube. Those screw clamps can be strong!

Photo from previous thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...et-intake.html

I have experienced this problem as well, and went through two iterations of fixing it.
First: I did a similar fix to what is seen in the previous thread. Epoxy/fiberglass resin. Final product seemed very sturdy.
I had some spirited driving sessions, and the heat rendered the fix as a bit futile. Upon inspecting the outlet, it bent a bit, compromising the patch altogether.

Second:
I found an ABS plastic tube with minimal thickness in Home Depot in the air conditioning section. This is a plastic coupler adapter.
Heated up the outlet pipe, test fitted the coupler, used specific ABS glue, cut with a precision hack saw, and it's perfect. The added thickness is as negligible without sacrificing structural rigidity.

Test drove up to 80 miles with 10 miles of 4-bar oil temps, and everything is kosher.
I recommend this as a permanent fix. I was weary about decreasing cross sectional area of the outlet, but this is not really the case with this fix. Also, sanding comes in handy.

Hope this aids anybody with a similar problem. Lexus should have definitely used more plastic in this coupling area of the airbox.

Very nice fix. I have the same issue with my air box. Can you post the part number/description of the coupler you used from Home Depot.

Changing the id of the maf housing isnt a good idea if you ask me. But then again the isf is a pretty smart self tuning car. So who knows.

100% agree with you. After contemplating options on how to permanently fix this issue, I thought of doing what I did, but grew weary. However, the fix is placed after the MAF sensor; the reduced cross-sectional area of the pipe is pretty negligible, especially if you know how to sand; the ring I cut is barely a centimeter in length and the thickness is but a few millimeters, if that. Upon looking at the finished product, I grew less skeptical. And everything is A okay thus far

That was my thread with the epoxy/fiberglass. I guess I need to go back and double check my patch to make sure it's still in tact.
