Any harm to switching from auto mode 'D' to manual mode while driving?*

So the truth is, you can't switch to manual mode with the paddles no matter what you do. You switch to S mode which mean you can limit the top gear the TCU will allow, but you will not be able to shift manually unless you move the shifter to the left. There are three shift modes - D - S - M. Drive is fully automatic. S allows you to limit the top gear. M allows you full manual control as long as you don't under/over rev the engine.
You can engage any of these modes at any time and the ECM will not ever do anything to jeopardize the car's components. The guys who programmed it are smarter than the machines they control and smarter than the dumbest IS-F owner, so they won't let you do something to hurt the car and force them to pay a warranty claim.
All of this is found in the owner's manual. It's a great source of information for the uninformed, but unfortunately not for the lazy since they won't bother to read it, they'll just post inane questions on a forum and expect the members to be kind enough to answer.
