Default Touch up Paint

I have Nebula Gray Pearl color on my car. I purchased the correct touch up paint from Lexus. I applied to numerous rock chips on front bumper and a few on the body. Does anyone know why the paint drys lighter in color compared to oem paint on rest of car.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance.

Even though you purchased the correct OEM touch up paint (using the right paint code), the biggest factor into why it's still hard to match your existing body color is because the rest of the car's paint had been exposed to the elements over time. Assuming you shook up and mixed the touch up paint as best as possible, the paint may still be a shade or a tad lighter or darker than the rest of your the car's body color. You can get close, but I don't think you'd ever be able to 100% match on the color unless you have two extremes of color - either black or white - or completely repaint those panels.

It's touch up paint so those rock chips are filled in to prevent rusting underneath for protection and from a distance those chips wouldn't be as noticeable.

Did you apply the clear coat on top of it after? Maybe it'll change the way light hits it a bit. In my experience, it's never a perfect match, but should be unnoticeable from a few feet away.

I have not applied the clear coat yet bc I was sure if I should do a few layers of touch up. I will go with the “less is more” philosophy and add the clear coat.
thank you!

Also not every nebula (or any color for that matter) is mixed the same. that's why doors and other parts are painted at the same time at the factory as the rest of the car. The bumpers/doors/misc parts follow the body down the assembly line. One paint batch is not the same as the next, despite having the same color code, etc.

Shake the bottle longer. Also it’s not meant to be a 100% perfect match. 6 feet away you shouldn’t be able to tell, but up close you’ll always be able to tell.

I ordered a small bottle of touch up paint on ebay from a seller called paintinize. It was mentioned in this forum a year or two ago and I have had great results with close to paint matching from the factory and it's easy to apply. Dries pretty quick as well.

Mix the clear coat about 70/30 color/clear in with the paint and see if that helps.

I always mix them for a better color match and if you need to wet sand and polish, the clear will help the final product blend in better.
