Default Rear Diff fluid change RWD & Transmission refilling

My 14 IS350 RWD has 63,000 miles and its time for a fluid change. I’m sure there are a few threads here on how to DIY the fluid change. This is my twist on the refill. The easiest way I found is to feed a 1/2” tubing down from the passenger rear wheel well into the fill hole. Use a funnel and simply pour 1.5 Qts down to the differential. I add a little more just to be sure there is enough. Then pull out the hose, and let the excess flow out. Seal it up and done. Note: hold the hose in your hand while filling. You dont want to spill oil in your car. 😉

Whats the outter diameter of your hose? Is that 1/2""

So you just drained, filled, let overfill drain a tad, and capped off?

The hose I bought Was from a hardware store. Its 1/2” ID. It fits tightly in the fill hole and wont slip out. I put a little more Oil than the listed capacity, pull the hose and let the excess drain to a slow trickle, then seal it up.

I have used the same process for the transmission as well. Just feed the hose in from the engine compartment and stay clear of the exhaust. Insert it only into the threaded hole, no further. With the tranny, it has to be running, so you dont want it to touch the internal parts. When adjusting the final fluid level, waiting for it to heat up to 106*F, I keep adding ATF until fluid starts to drain out the overflow hole. Then wait until the right temp Is reached and close the drain.

I was due to do a drain and fill on my transmission so I did it this morning and took some pictures. I did this stone cold this morning so the exhaust wasnt scorching hot. When I drained the old ATF 3.75 qts came out and I put a little less than 4qts back in. Started the engine and let it idle until it reached 95*F and then opened the overflow bolt. At 108*F on my Engine Link app I closed the the overflow bolt. You can see the coolant warming faster than the ATF.. this is so much easier than pumping it in from under the car. The hex socket is 5mm, the drain is 14mm and the refill is 24mm.

Note: the 1/2” ID hose should only be pushed in just as deep as the threaded hole, no further.

There are several apps you can get. I have an iphone. I bought enginelink hd $9.00 in the app store and the bluetooth device on ebay called LeLink $35. You need to put in a custom PID for the trans temp.

Header: 7E1

PID: 2182

Formula: ((((A*256)+B)*(84/1000))-480)/12

Min: 0

Max: 300

Description: 2014 IS350 trans temp

Units: *F

Actually wasn't bad at all using weed sprayer. Cheap, fast and effectless. Took about 20 minutes max to get all the diff fluid in.

It doesn't come from factory with synthetic, but most will put synthetic as it's better and lasts longer.

hey! I gotta do my diff’s soon, I’ve heard some ppl complain that they had some noise after switching away from the Toyota fluid, mostly in cold climates. I was going to use Amsoil severe gear as my OCD kicks in and tells me amsoil is “better”...any risk you think with being in Ottawa and putting in non-OEM diff fluid?

You'll be fine with the Amsoil...just get the appropriate viscosity of oil.
In regards to the comment about noise, it could depend on what non-Toyota oil they used and the viscosity. Not every manufacturer makes oils in every viscosity...without specific info on that condition, it's hard to say what may have caused the noise.
Also keep in mind that diff's work on splash lubrication...meaning just that, the gears splash around in the oil...so once you have the correct viscosity and the correct amount, you really shouldn't have an issue.

Do these cars require "friction modifier" for the diffs?

I thought only if you have a LSD which wasn’t an option until last few model years

Short answer is no.

The long answer is there is specific oil for the non-LSD diff. and specific oil for the LSD diff.
If you use the correct oil, then you don't need a friction modifier.
If you use the incorrect oil in the LSD diff. then you will need a friction modifier.
Bottom line...just use the correct oil.

Right.. They factory fill only has 2 oil versions

I do believe both still have a 60k mile service interval.. The LX version is double the cost of LT.

Non LSD = 75w85 LT

LSD requires = 75w85 LX

My 350 AWD calls for 75-85 in rear (75-90) in the front...bought the 75-90 amsoil severe gear for both back n front.
