Rear differential fluid change anyone?
my 2014 is350 is coming up on 50k miles and i will be bringing car in a local shop soon for an inspection and emissions test. Im thinking of getting the rear differentail fluid changed because in our service manual it says "inspect rear differential fluid" and my local shop technician previously reccomened having it change when my car had about 40,000k miles. What would yall do? Change or no change?

In Middle East the manual states that we have to replace the Dif. fluid every 40,000 km, and I replaced it twice until now. If the manual doesn’t say to replace it in your region, then keeping the fluid is better, becuase you cannot know how bad is the fluid by now. I will not replace the dif. fluid anymore and I will go for run to fail.

I bought my is350 as a lease return with 50,000 miles on it. I do my own oil changes because I like to do that. When I checked the rear diff I had to get a 24 inch long breaker bar to open the plug, I think that the fluid level had never been checked, it was low by several ounces.
Anyway, I changed the fluid and I recommend that you do too. Couldn't hurt, it could help, and it is cheap compared to the cost of a rear diff repair.

Front:
Standard Differential Oil Capacity:
0.65 to 0.75 liters (0.69 to 0.79 US qts, 0.58 to 0.66 Imp. qts)
Rear:
Standard Differential Oil Capacity:
1.30 to 1.40 liters (1.38 to 1.47 US qts, 1.15 to 1.23 Imp. qts)
Standard action is to fill until it starts leaking out the fill hole.
Funny, i went into a toyota dealership and they told me the front differential was actually a transfer case that's part of the transmission.

Thanks very much, I renewed both my front and rear diff fluids last week at 77,000km, well before the recommended interval, and both front and rear came out very clean still. I suspect these fluids probably don't need much attention and for ppl who neglect it, they can probably get away with it, but I think moving forward, I'll do it once every 2 years since it's cheap insurance.

Yeah just replace it. it's cheap and easy. Do it every 50k. Most would not keep their cars long enough before they see the ill effects of NOT changing the fluid, but at least do it for the next owner =)

Am i safe to assume this is a simple diy?
Jack up to level surface and let car run until at operating temp.
Drain from drainbolt on diff. Then plug drainbolt and fill into the fill that should be the bolt above until it's full and basically it comes back out?
Obviously using oem lexus/toyota atf or something with the same ratings.

Bought my 06 IS350 new and never changed the diff fluid or transmission fluid. Sold the car a few months ago with 238,000 miles on it. Drove like it did when I took it off of the dealer lot.

I came across this video while digging around the forums, made by the CL User DIYDanCars
how different would it be from this?:
He also has a video on the transmission filter as well, would this be any different from doing it to the 3IS?

After stalking tacoma and tundra forums it doesn't seem to be a big issue. I've concluded to do this with amsoil and if i couldn't get amsoil id get motul. As long as the diff oil is the right weights and gl5.as far as atf goes I'd be doing it with Toyota atf ws
