Exclamation ExclamatioHelp! 2016 lexus is 200t / shocks replacement

Hi Everyone!

Unfortunately I have to get my rear shocks changed, I wanted to get feedback from y'all because the dealership wants to charge me $145 per shock and 650 of labor. I called around and one of them said $1200 for shocks and labor. I find that crazy expensive and would like to avoid paying that amount. However, one of my friends is a certified mechanic, has worked 5+ years for a Ford dealership and I believe he can change them but I wanted to get feedback on the process, can anyone do it? or is it pretty hard? is there sensors? brake keys? I would really appreciate it.

Hi Delmiii....I am not a mechanic nor would I ever do this type of stuff myself but I have seen threads where people have posted their experience about swapping these or installing lowering springs. So if you friend is mechanically inclined, he should be able to do without too much issues...I am sure you will find a few threads on here and if I can find one that helps, I'll come back and update this response...

I agree that 600$ worth of labor seems expensive but I always look at the whole picture and see what could go wrong and it is worth going through all that to save some money...Then again, some enjoy doing these kind of projects, so for them, that is different. It is like me with detailing cars....I can spend 10 hours washing, waxing and such and it is total relaxation while most would rather spend 300$ and have someone do that s h i t...

Now someone (Thanks SUNAMER) posted this in another thread yesterday and while this is to install lowering springs, it sort of gives you an idea of what is involved. because you still ave to take apart some of the suspension components...Maybe it will help give you a rough idea of what is involved:

You may also want to look at the suspension category

Hope this helps....Keep us posted

The rear shocks are held in place with 3 nuts at the top and a nut and bolt (or just a bolt, can't remember exactly) at the bottom.
The longest parts of the swap will be putting the car up on jackstands and taking off the wheels and removing the trunk inner side trim to access the 3 nuts on top.
You could likely do everything with basic hand tools and some elbow grease.
If your buddy is a Ford tech then he's more than capable to do this...and definitely has all the tools to do this.
The springs are separate, so no need to even touch them.

Thanks Sasnuke...I didn't want to imply that the rear springs needed to come to replace the shocks but give a rough document showing the torque specs and all but as always, I should learn to not jump too quick...I want to help so much that I often muddy the water lol

I never go to the dealer, since my car is out of warranty. Any good mechanic can work on your car, especially if he or she works on Japanese cars.

Sasnuke is right. The hardest part was removing the trunk liner it's a pain. Be careful not to lose your clips between the rear seat and trunk like I did lol
