Dyno Results - Numbers presented are best of 3 runs each
Stock w/ Charcoal: 160.10HP / 137.43 lb-ft
Stock w/o Charcoal: 164.21 HP / 141.83 lb-ft
Difference: +4.11 HP, +4.40 lb-ft.... +2.54% HP and +3.15% lb-ft increase respectively
K&N w/ Charcoal: 164.42 HP / 142.53 lb-ft
K&N w/o Charcoal: 167.09 HP / 143.05 lb-ft
Difference: +2.67 HP, +0.52 lb-ft.... +1.61% HP and negligible lb-ft increase respectively
VBOX Results - Average of 3 Runs - 2nd gear
Stock w/ Charcoal:
20 to 60 mph runs: 9.01s
45 to 60 mph runs: 3.61s
Stock w/o Charcoal:
20 to 60 mph runs: 8.73s (-0.28s) (+3.16%)
45 to 60 mph runs: 3.46s (-0.15s) (+4.14%)
K&N w/ Charcoal:
20 to 60 mph runs: 8.81s
45 to 60 mph runs: 3.49s
K&N w/o Charcoal:
20 to 60 mph runs: 8.70s (-0.11s) (1.25%)
45 to 60 mph runs: 3.46s (-0.03s) (+0.87%)
Comparing the VBOX times of Stock w/o charcoal and K&N w/o Charcoal, there is basically no difference. K&N w/o charcoal was 0.03s faster from 20 to 60mph, and no difference from 45 to 60mph.
He goes on to talk about how the G's you feel between the combinations is physically imperceptible between Stock w/ charcoal: 0.202 G's vs Stock w/o charcoal 0.209 G's.

People have been doing this in the blue and white community for a decade or so too.
Helps absorb vapor thats in the intake tract.

I'm sure some guy in Japan experimented. LOL.
Who knows though how this works with a turbocharger. but it's a restriction removed nonetheless. Cars still got SULEV ratings before charcoal filters were a thing so I'm not too worried about it.

Thinking I'll maybe put a stock filter in there to deter them from checking when it comes time for emissions inspection. Or take it to the guy I know who wont check.
Of course, I'm assuming being In California they are a state that would fail my test for this (if found missing)
