For the 2016 IS the maps are Gen 8 (micro SD card), Map Part Number PT219-GEN08-15, ID 86271-78012 - see here for post that includes Lexus' nav chart (thx Kansas) that used to be posted on their navigation site (which has since been inactive). I believe the last number in the part number is the year of the nav update.
I am being told by my dealer that this must be dealer installed - I can't believe that's true, can some confirm this?
No offense to your dealer, but I am highly skeptical of that also. What did they quote you for installation? If free, then I'd let them do it if you have the time. From what I know, as long as the Micro SD Card (Gen 8) has not been used previously, it only needs to be inserted into the map micro SD card slot and the car will initialize it upon first use. IIRC, some have posted that it can take a while for the maps to show up again (couple of hours of driving), as I guess it may take some time for the new map data to transfer (download?) to the nav system in the car.
If your dealer charges, I'd try it yourself (or call around to other dealers to see if they confirm it must be dealer installed), then if you have no success installing, go have the dealer install it.
The dealer quoted me $275. for the update, but I didn't confirm if that was the price installed. I assume it was since they told me it required a dealer install.
Seems like that price is for the art and install.
In Canada the the micro SD card is $230 including tax, so US that's way less than $275.
And no, it doesn't need to be dealer installed.
As mentioned above, with the vehicle off, remove the old card, insert the new card, turn the vehicle on.
It will take a while for the system to upload the data from the card the first time, but after that you are good to go.
Any instructions will be on screen, so just follow them.
