AH! True I forgot the 250 still had the 6 speed (not that that is really worse than the 8 speed).
I found the 8 speed to be noticeably better than 6 speed. My dealer has a ton of 250s for loaners so whenever my car went in for service, I got to play around with the 6 speed. The 8 speed had way better manual shifting and in sport mode, the tranny felt more responsive even in auto mode. It would also hold the gears while cornering. The 6 speed gearing may have been a little more aggressive to shave off a tenth or two in the 60 but all other situations, the 8 speed felt better. The 8 speed isn't up to bar with the ZF in the BMW though.

I think the 8-speed is probably going to be smoother in low-throttle situations due to the gears being closer together, but yeah the 6-speed will give you better 0-60 thanks to having only one shift. It tops out at like 65 MPH in second gear. I haven't driven the 8-speed yet, but I kinda wish I had. Then again, ignorance is bliss - the 6-speed ain't that bad when you are manually shifting, as long as you are actually driving fast.
What I didn't like about the 8-spd, was that you were always aware that the gearbox has 8 gears and all the shifts (and there are a lot more than with the 6-spd) caught my attention. All those new gearboxes with 7 or more gears should give you the feeling that the shifts happen somewhere in the background and you are not always aware what gear you're in because it shouldn't matter.
Ofcourse I believe the 8-spd gearbox results in a better mpg rating.
I compared the 6 speed and 8 speed when I purchased my '15 IS 350 F Sport (AWD vs RWD). 8 speed was much better during spirited driving. Downshifts seemed to hit a better gear for passing in the 8 than the 6. It had an overall smoother operation during normal driving as well.
350 has 100HP more, Bigger Brake system and the 350 Fsport has better suspension and aggressive look, if you care about power and handling go for 350 Fsport, if you don't i think a White Pearl IS250 is adorable for you girls ! but overall platform is the same.
PS: oh ya those guys talking about Gearing and Transmission speed, don't listen to them babe, more gears in a 400+HP car is something you will look at but 8 speed in a 200-300HP don't bother, 6 speed on the IS350 is better !
OH ya welcome Aboard Grace Girl just notice this is your 1st post

@GraceGirl, welcome to the forum. Some good posts above including a dedicated thread to more detailed information. If you want the Cole's Notes version:
- 350 has more power and will consume a little more gas
- 350 has bigger brakes and will stop a touch more quickly
- 350 has adaptive variable suspension on F-Sport version
- 350 Rear Wheel Drive version comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of 6-speed.
- Besides the above, both 250 and 350 are mechanically and visually identical in and out

8 speed is far better. Tested both and the 6 speed is sluggish and isn't responsive in manual mode. I can bounce off the limiter in the 8 speed all day while the 6 will up shift for you.did you even test drive the 8 speed?
