Default Factory Spoiler Install

Came to my Lexus dealer today for my scheduled maintenance, I brought along a spoiler I purchased from another Lexus dealer. They told me it would be $60 for a template that needed to be ordered and $417 to install it. Its a piece of plastic with adhesive on it and 2 holes need to be drilled.. Honestly can this be installed without the template and will the wing stick on with just the pre-applied adhesive? I find that price a little ridiculous and rather do it myself if I don't need to drill it.. also what is the template for?

depending on the spoiler - if its the OEM one thats comes on the 2015 IS - it can be applied with just 3M tape and no drilling. A buddy of mines did that with no issues.

Yup the OEM spoiler. Did he add more 3M tape then whats already there? Also did he need the template to get it straight?

Nope he just pretty much eye-balled it and it came out straight. Test fit before applying it with 3M tape. I'm sure if your not drilling and you want it on really snug I would add additional 3M tape - but make sure its the heavy duty one.

Can confirm you can just eyeball it with 3M tape. Drilling would be overkill and would ruin your trunk. 3M is holding up just fine on mine and makes it easier if I ever want to take it off!

Painter's tape could assist with placement before you pull the backing, I plan to go this route.

Since it is an OEM Lexus/Toyota accessory I think they have to overkill and can't just tape and stick like aftermarket offerings and need to ensure it is will never come off due to liability; they don't want it coming off, hitting someone and someone getting sued, then get sued themselves. It definitely makes it easier to take off and gives options down the road if you want to take it off or go with another spoiler and don't want to worry about not covering holes.

$400 lol. Yeah just do it yourself! Here's mine how it came when I bought it. Perhaps i can take up close pics of the gaps so you get an idea how to install yours? Let me know:

So I did install it myself, my only issue is is now about 3-4 days later one side is starting to become loose. I forget exactly which adhesive I used, but I know it was from 3M, im kind of bummed its already loosening.. does anybody have any input on what would be the best adhesive to use?

I had an aftermarket duck spoiler on my TSX that was installed with just 3M tape from Autozone. Lasted the life of the time I owned it (7+ years).
Make sure you thoroughly clean the surface when applying. You'll also want to make sure full contact is made. Maybe try a stronger tape. I could be wrong, but it's most likely a flaw in installation if its coming off already (or maybe defective tape).

Maybe this is why Lexus uses screws so they can guarantee a clean install despite installer variation/quality. You might have John one day not carefully wipe the area down or Juan another day not pay attention. The screws are an added layer of protection against warranty claims for them and save money in the end.

If you are a high end-focused-detail oriented person, you can probably install it successfully without screws as long as the job is done with PERFECT PRECISION.

This means careful prep.

Careful wipe down/alcohol wipe.

Careful application of adhesive/spoiler to trunk lid.

Careful cure/dry time before washing/exposure to moisture/water. etc.

Also assuming you are using the factory supplied adhesive or better

bumping this back up as i am thinking about adding the OE spoiler to my car.

aren't there studs on the spoiler that go through the holes in the trunk to mount it? for those of you that are mounting the spoiler with just 3M tape, did you remove the studs? do they just unscrew from the spoiler or did you have to cut them off or something? Thanks

You will want to get tape rated at 15lbs or more and clean your trunk really well. Strip off any wax or sealant at the same time. Test fit and mark where each corner should be at, warm up the 3M tape as well before sticking and you will have no problems.

I parked my car in the sun for an hour and made sure surface was clean, washed my hands really good and heated the 3M tape with a blow dryer for a few minutes(gets the tape sticky). I peeled the corners of the tape so that I can apply pressure to the corners and work my way down. Once everything was sticking, I applied even pressure on the entire spoiler for a few minutes at a time to make sure it had bonded really well. It's been about a year and it's stuck on pretty good.

Like everybody else here, I also eyeyballed my install of the factory spoiler. I did add extra 3M mounting tape in addition to the one already on the spoiler though since I wasn't drilling my trunk. It's been a year and so far no lifting *knock on wood*

Are the bolts on the OEM removable, that it can just be taped on without holes?
