Hello everyone,
Just took delivery of a beautiful IS 250 f2 2015, car is perfect in every sense except for one thing; the rear licence plate is held by only two upper screws, when I close the trunk lid the plate’s lower end makes a “cheap” impact noise. Has any one resolved this weird noise issue and how?

I know some of you guys will think of this posting as snobbish but please, the issue is
“Why two screw holes for a rear licence plate instead of four, like any other car?”

 

I don't have that problem, but maybe you can try placing double sided tape between the trunk and lower corners of the license plate.

 

i put foam behind the top are where the bolt goes and the bottom. no more noise. also if you have the license plate frame, they might have not put the plate inside the frame causing the frame to rattle. but the foam behind the license plate has resolved all problems. make sure the plate bottom is bent slightly back so its not elevated above the lid.

 

can you paste a magnet to the bottom part of the license plate?

 

similar to krnbo i put a sponge between the plate and the trunk

Having the same problem after getting the F sport license plate frame.

 

I did the foam thing, the rattle is somewhat better but nowhere like my other car's trunk lid. I will try to find thicker foam and redo the whole exercise again. Does anybody have an answer on why the hell there is only two screw-holes for North American licence plates?

 

Actually I don't think it is North America specific. The licence plates used in Japan are also held by 2 screws (1 bigger screw with security lock and 1 regular screw)

And I have done the foam thing as well and don't experience any rattle at all. In fact, I have foam on every single car we have owned.

Maybe it depends on how you put the foam to the back of the licence plate?

 

I fixed the foam on the lower end of the licence plate where it touches the trunk's lid; like I said I'll try to use a thicker foam and try to bend the licence plate a little just to add some pressure to reduce rattling.

 

Foam should do the trick. I have never had Japanese car with 4 licence plate holes. In most of the world outside North America, licence plates are shorter and wider so the bottom holes would be unnecessary. The 2 older American made vehicles did though.
