Does anyone else notice a rattle when they close their trunk?

My top screws are plenty tight, but the bottom portion seems to not be secure enough since they do not have screws.

 

had the same issue...I thought it was the plate, but it wasn't only that. I went to the dealer and they did something which took out 50% of the noise. Maybe they greased it inside, not sure. Also, I'm using some adhesive foam pieces behind the plate on the bottom so it's under tension with the trunk.

 

Yes it does - installed self-adhesive foam tape behind the license plate (a few layers) to take out some of the rattle - sounds less metallic and 50% quieter - but still makes a noise when the truck is closed.

yes you're correct, its the rattling of the license plate against the trunk or the license plate dealer bracket. if you still have your temporary tags or your "x" dealership tag, put that in between the trunk and your license plate and screw it on. don't screw too tight though! this procedure took the rattling away, gave me a firm license plate for when i use the area to push down to close the trunk.

 

One thing you can do to know for sure if it's the plate rattling or the trunk is to place your hand over the plate and close the trunk. If it still makes any noise, then it's not the plate. In my case it was the actual trunk for the most part.

 

try putting small piece of double sided tape. Add more as needed. that should stop the rattling,

 

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I will try some double sided tape on the bottom to see if that stops the noise, just wanted to make sure I didn't somehow botch a license plate install. It makes sense that the actual plates rattle since they are metal, and the ones from the dealer are paper.

 

Yeah this is pretty common. I used a thick piece of double sided stick foam, like camper tape, on the back of the license plate across the bottom. My last 3 cars had this exact same problem -- thick foam tape works well.

The stuff I used is like 1/4" thick but you absolutely can't tell it's there.

 

I think I am going to try those felt pads that you put on the bottom of furniture, to prevent it from scratching hardwood.

Will report back with the results tomorrow.

 

My concern with those would be their ability to hold moisture. I can see them getting mold/mildew on them. Stuck behind a plate, they won't dry easily after a solid rain or car wash.

 

Ah I hadn't thought of that. Does your foam adhesive handle weather/carwash well? And does it lessen the sound, or completely remove it?

 

Any chance you have a link to the product you used? I'm not really sure what you mean by camper tape.

 

use those felt pads for the bottom of chair legs. done....

 

Was hesitant to use those since they are absorbent and will most likely mold and rot...
