2IS Clutch Replacement Costs
Clutch has been slipping a little bit on my car, so I think it's time to replace it. Called a couple of dealerships to get quotes (see below)
Dealership #1: $5500
Dealership #2: $8500
Dealership #3: $4000
My local shop: $2000
As you can see, there are some heavy price discrepancies here. Dealerships #1 and #2 are in an expensive area, dealership #3 is in the middle of nowhere. Has anyone got this done for their car before? If so, what did you pay? Dealership or local shop?

Not an IS, but the clutch replacement for my '94 Miata was $1,192.10 with me providing all the parts (which were $153.11 of that cost), which included an Exedy OEM-replacement clutch disc and pressure plate, resurfacing the flywheel, and new the slave and master cylinders too, at a Miata specialist shop.
Those quotes are insane.
The clutch disc and pressure plate shouldn't cost more than $350, and there's no way labor can be that much more than it was on the Miata, especially given that the IS doesn't have a powerplant frame to move out of the way.

What about independent mechanic shops? There was a former Toyota tech in my area and he did a great job with the spark plugs.
Call around. Read reviews online. I know you think dealership = good, reliable job, but independent shops can be great, as well.

The OP included a "Local Shop" quote. I'd ask that local shop if they will install parts you purchase (clutch itself, throwout bearing and flywheel). Then look around for a performance setup if you are looking for something more "racy" or just buy OEM.

The shop that replaced the clutch & flywheel on my IS250 took about 6 hours of labor.
I brought all the parts so I paid for just the labor. Ask the shop what their book time is for the clutch replacement and find out their hourly rate.
By the way, I think the OP received expensive quotes from the dealership because of the OEM dual mass flywheel. I remember OEM dual mass flywheel to be expensive (~$2000) and they cannot be resurfaced when doing a clutch job. There is no aftermarket dual mass flywheel for the 2IS, and I ended up going with an aftermarket single mass flywheel which has been working well for me.

Do I necessarily need a new flywheel with clutch replacement? Is the flywheel part of a clutch kit?

The clutch kit does not include a flywheel.
For cars with a single mass flywheel, you can reuse a flywheel by resurfacing it (similar to resurfacing a brake rotor) when doing a clutch job.
However, the oem flywheel for IS250 is a dual mass flywheel and DMF cannot be resurfaced due to the design.
It is highly recommended to get a new flywheel so you do not have to drop the transmission twice when the flywheel needs to be replaced down the road.

Car has 60,000 miles. What if the OEM flywheel is fine & doesn't require replacement? Won't know until its pulled out of the car, right?

you can reuse the OEM flywheel but it's like resurfacing only one side of your brake rotors when changing the brake pads - the new clutch will need a longer break in, and will be done unevenly!
reuse also does depend on how bad your currently flywheel is.

OK good info. I found a shop that will let me bring a flywheel. Anyone have experience with the Fidanza aftermarket aluminum flywheel? Or should I try to go OEM?

I am running a Performance Gear SMF + sprung clutch disc (OEM Toyota Tacoma clutch) which has been discussed in this forum thread.
Keep in mind that the OEM set up is DMF + unsprung clutch disc.
If you go with any SMF (Fidanza is SMF as well) setup, make sure to get a clutch disk which has springs. Otherwise, you will experience vibrations and noises.
