After we had a massive rain storm that I drove home in, the next morning when I started my car the steering would shudder in notch like intervals and it was very hard to steer. The p/s light was not on but it was really bad, I had to like fight with the steering wheel to turn, I did some research and some people said that all I needed to do was clean the steering control module connections. Well while I was driving to the auto parts store to get the cleaning supplies my p/s light came on and I lost power steering. After I came out the store and turned the car back on the light was back off and I had the hard notch like steering again. I cleaned the steering control module and steering rack electrical connections and added dielectric grease but that didn’t do anything at all. Now I’m thinking I need to buy a new steering control module? Or should I buy a new steering rack, or both. Im just not sure what to do and would like any suggestions, thank you!
I have my EPS from before I switched to my ISF module. PM me if you do end up needing to replace yours, mine might work. Also, I've got a 2014 C, so it's probably an improvement in steering feel over the earlier ones.
Maybe remove the grease, and reclean the connections. You shouldn't have to use grease. The connections have a good water tight seal.
Make sure none of the pins have corrosion. About how old is your alternator?
No codes no check engine light no power steering light; which makes this all harder to figure out what the issue is. When I cleaned everything none of the pins had corrosion they all looked good, and I had the alternator replaced in January .
If said water was all about, pull the splash shield and remove the inner boots next to the rack and see if water entered the R&P. That's where I would start.
PS You'll need replacement clamps and the tool to install them. I guess you could remove the outer clamps and squeeze the boot but it would have to be completely full of water for something to com out.
@MikeFig82 IIRC you had your rack out for bushings? Do you recall seeing a vent on the rack?
OP - how deep was the water?
As for the 80A fuse, there would be no assist if that pops.
Interesting discussion, but be aware that this thread is more than two years old, and the original poster hasn't been here since July 2021, so I'd be surprised if he responds at this point.

lol.... hate it when that happens. Someone recently dredged up an 11 year old post. Added no value to it (a comment to help) and for what reason, Idk...
Dude, that's hydraulic R&P... Not the same. But ya, OP said they checked connections.
And honestly dielectric grease is fine. Ensure the flavor was non-conductive.
Yeah, understand it's a photo showing hydraulic power steering rack and pinion (not electric). Photo was just to provide an example of steering rack connecter / location (had easy access to the photo).
