Question Melted Dashboard

Hey guys, I recently bought an IS350 2007 and I'm sure by now all of you have heard of the common melting dashboard issue in that generation of IS. I had call Lexus corporate and warranty to see if they could extend the warranty of the car since it was part of a program that replaced melted dashboards. This replacement was only valid until 2017 and the previous owner had not taken the car to the dealership to have it fixed. Now I'm stuck with a sticky dashboard. I was wondering if any of you have ever wrapped the dashboard of your IS or any other car. Would you advise against it? If you think it's a good option, do you have any tips on doing it yourself? Thanks in advance!

Lots of threads regarding this dashboard. Peruse through the threads, you'll find them. Long story short, unfortunately your chances of getting a replacement dashboard is very low. Lots of members in this forum are in the same boat.

I missed my warranty date by 3 months and Lexus won't do squat. So I'm interested in any after market fixes.

Disappointed in Lexus for not continuing the warranty. My car is 11 years old and the average car on the road is 12 years old and most do not have defective interior parts like this.

Is this problem completely gone from the next gen IS?

Im fairly new also... But thanks to this forum I got my 2011 is250 dash and all 4 door panels replaced two weeks ago free of charge from Lexus of Mobile. It took 2 months for parts to arrive, and I thought they were just stalling me and giving me the runaround. Then one day I got the call....
Now if I can just get my fuel mileage and power back to normal after clean throttle body, replacing plugs, and pcv valve. I’m down to 16mpg with no Check Engine lights..smdh

Thought about it...however that material expands/contracts so i figured against it. I'd venture the wrap would look like **** after a while with bubbles/creases.

The issue was fixed in the middle of 2008.

Can you give us the details on your processing for getting your dashboard replaced? Thanks in advance!

I missed the cutoff too on my 06. Depending on how badly its melted, I found that applying leather conditioner and then UV protection on top of it helped a lot. It got rid of the stickiness of my dash / door panels. You have to re apply every summer.

A good upholstery shop can cover the dash in vinyl or leather. Won't be cheap, though.

If your mechanically inclined the dash is about $300.

Living on the Mississippi gulf coast (Gulfport), the closest Lexus dealerships are both an hour away— New Orleans, LA to the west, and Mobile,AL to the east.
I originally called New Orleans but was really unimpressed.. The receptionist came off as inexperienced and actually gave me the number to corporate saying that they may be able to help.. This was a year ago..

This past February the wife and I were “residents” at the women and children’s hospital in Mobile for over 4 weeks due to pregnancy complications. One day I called the dealership and inquired about the airbag recall and brought up my dash situation..I was told to bring it by that afternoon. When I got there the service manager greeted me by name and took some pictures of my dash and door panels (which I wasn’t concerned about). The inspection took all of 5 minutes and was told that I’d get a call when ALL parts came in.

Two weeks go by without hearing anything so I called his direct line but had to leave a msg. Waited another week and tried again with no luck..By this time the wife was out of hospital, but I was still commuting several times a week to visit my newborn son in the NICU. I was getting the impression that I was getting put on the back burner, so on week 4 I went by the dealership omw back home.. He confirmed that everything was in motion but that the parts can take several weeks... A few days later I get the call and schedule drop off appt.
While in the shop, I was put in a loaner for 2 days while all work was performed. In the end, I only paid $80 which was the oil change service I requested. The dealership replaced dash cover, all 4 door panels, replaced airbag, replaced faulty wiper arm nut, detailed my car, and even filled up my tank free of charge. Overall I’m super happy ... but I kinda got the feeling I came off as a nuisance by the lack of communication from the manager and sloppy workmanship.. They must let their “c-techs” or the detail guys do the warranty work..I had to clean my own windshield in service drive because of large black streaks from removing that dash cover( dead center of drivers view),and even had to bring it back for a vent that was missing on passenger side. When I got home I noticed a gouging on some trim pieces, unaligned center console and was obviously forced to fit, mismatched bolts and screws and even 2 10mm bolts rolling around to god knows what.
I have a small collision repair shop and have been in business for 14 years.. Overall I’m thankful for the new dash, but was really unimpressed by the workmanship and experience with office staff..

You were lucky to a certain extend that you dashboard and door panels were replaced and it only took you a short time of wait. Unfortunately your experience with the dealer was not as good. I would assume that they had ordered spares of the recalled items and found a customer who needed them and your were sorta the "lucky customer." I think you still came ahead. There are very unhappy Lexus IS owners who are stuck with the melted dashboards and door panels who missed the deadline. I actually have melted Rear Door Panels. I may have to try my luck in asking my dealer if they have extras. I am due for a fuel something recall, I will certainly try in asking of they have RR door panels available. Better yet I will give my buddy a call at the dealership and see he can find out if there are spare DR RR door panels, unclaimed.
