Question Did Lexus fix the 2006 IS350 oil consumption problem?

This post is regarding the issue that many early model IS350 owners are experiencing with their 2nd generation IS350s. I know there was an aesthetic and suspension/steering refresh in 2008, but was the engine ever changed at any point, or do all 2nd generation IS350s have exactly the same engine and are all equally likely to experience the same issue given enough time/mileage? I haven't been able to find any information regarding any engine components of the 2GR-FSE being changed from the original design (which could make sense given the oil combustion issue has only recently popped up).

For reference:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...uming-oil.html
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Lexus/...e/engine.shtml

The reason I ask is I am interested in purchasing a 2006 IS350 at 77K miles, but I am hesitant given how common this problem is.

If I remember well I read that the engine on these were designed to use some oil. Of course add miles and engine wear will only make this worse. Its the same engine so they all have this by design. Anyone correct me if I am wrong?

I have a Sept '05 manufacture-dated IS350 and only now at 122k miles am I starting to see a half quart of oil consumption during my normal 10k mile oil changes. 10k miles ago I would hardly see any oil usage...< an 1/8th of a quart on the dipstick.

Not all motors were driven the same when broken in and throughout their lifespan; so oil consumption will obviously vary. Stories of excessive oil usage are rare occasions and are not the norm.

I'd not worry about it at all really.

Actually this topic should be more focus on, because I myself have experience a huge difference in oil consumption that never occurred before after a fresh oil change. The engine seems to use up or burn more oil than it normally should and tripping the low oil hazard sign on the dash. Needing to top off.

Bad PCV valve design? When I did my knock sensors on my old GS400. Pulled the throttle body off, and looked inside the manifold there was about 1/2 Qrt of oil sitting there. My only assumption was it was still getting sucked up from the PCV valve iteself. Replaced it with a new one, and checked weeks later same scenario. So probably over time it just oil getting sucked in and pooling. The IS intake manifold is a different design as when you do a plug change. You can see some oil pooled up where the gaskets sit.

There was a thread on this a while back. I feel the problem is not with the PCV but with the oil control rings on the pistons. I was using appropriately 1 quart in 2500 miles. I ran a can of BG EPR, pn 109 through right before an oil change. I’ve seen consumption drastically decreased, to the point of almost none over 7k miles. Toyota has the same issue with a few of their 4 cylinders as well. Sludge gets behind the ring and blocks its function. Pn109 frees that sludge.

Thank you for the product recommendation and including your first-hand experience! Do you know of any possible negative effects that BG EPR PN109 may have? Since it is acting as a solvent to break down the buildup, is it possible that it will cause corrosion within the engine (i.e. damaging the rings themselves)? From what I've found from looking through reviews on PN109, its harshest critics (who leave 1-star and 2-star reviews on Amazon) only say that it "doesn't work". Only a couple reviews say it made things worse, which are outliers. I am just a bit apprehensive because it seems too good to be true that this product can do so much good with little to no consequences if it fails. I can only find sponsored demonstrations on YouTube and not a completely unbiased review, the demonstrations are great though! (Demonstration starts at about 3:45)

I’m certainly no paid shill. All I have is anecdotal evidence but it’s not just me who has had success. Search this forum. BG isn’t a large company but they do make very good products. I don’t see any negative side effects considering you’re already consuming oil. Plus pn109 is cheap and only in your motor for 15-20 minutes.

I apologize if anything I said sounded accusatory, I'm just being (perhaps overly) cautious about what goes in to my engine since I haven't heard of that additive before. I didn't mean any offense with my questions. May I ask how long have you been using PN109 to treat your engine?

I didn’t take it as accusatory. It’s good you care about this issue. I only ran the product once, about 7k miles ago. Since then I’ve noticed very little consumption. These really are good cars and the 2gr is one of the best v6s out there. I’ve seen/heard of several with over 300k miles.

Awesome, it's good to know that its effect can last for almost a year (under my average annual mileage) without having to be reapplied. I've heard the same-- it was on Ward's Best 10 Engines for a number a years as well! Thank you for the info!

between the OCI my 2008 IS350 usually trigger the low oil light once and requires a top up.
I do drive my car hard to redline every other day though
