Well, according to what Bichon is saying, air filters don't have anything to do with MPGs in recent cars because of the technologies but you're experiencing a correlation between changing air filter and your fuel consumption.

So either something else happened and has affected your MPG or the new filter is the cause.

 

instead of guessing what it is, why not just go buy a air filter... its not like a air filter is expensive...
