Default maintenance at dealership

hi everyone,

took my car in for an oil change at 20k. like many members have suggested, i asked for an oil change, not a 20k mile service, and total still came out to $140. i think the service advisor just judged it base on how many miles i have.

is the $140 reasonable? or should i ask in a different way when i come in?

thanks !

No, that's nowhere close to reasonable.

An oil change (JUST an oil change) at my lexus dealer is about $50+tax.

Sounds a lot like they ignored what you asked for and gave you the 20k service anyway (which , of course, is just an oil change, plus some useless inspections they get to jack the price up for)

As Kurtz said, that is way too high.

For the next oil change, you don't have to bring it in to a Lexus dealer. You can bring it to Toyota dealership to ask for oil change only. It should save you a few bucks off of what Lexus charge for service.

Did you not ask the dealer what that $140 included? Because my dealer also charges about $50 for an oil change. If they told me it'd be $140 for an oil change I'd immediately ask them to break that down, and in doing so they'd have to reveal that it included test drive this, inspect that, etc etc.

i did, but my brain wasn't clear at the time, he did say it only included oil change, filter, top off fluids, etc ...

he said oil change is $82, which sounds higher than what most others here are paying..

Which dealer in CA are you going to? Oil changes shouldn't be $140. Even synthetic oil changes at the dealers around me is about $100 total

A regular oil change at the dealers around me is about $75. So $82 doesn't sound too crazy. But $82 is still high for a regular oil change.
Most independent shops will do it for less than $30.

Just oil change yes, full 20k service no.

It all depends, do you just want an oil change or do you want them to check your car for any issues.

Oil Change
Replace engine oil and oil filter

20K
Replace engine oil and oil filter
Reset reminder light
Adjust tire pressure & inspect for wear
Visually inspect brake pads and rotors, lines and hoses
Measure thickness of brake pads and rotor run out
Inspect engine air filter
inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect body, chassis body nuts and bolts
Inspect drive shaft / propeller shaft dust boots
Check installation of driver's floor mat
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Top off all fluids
Road Test Vehicle

You were definitely taken advantage of. I would complain...I have paid 55 or 60 max, but that is just crazy. Not even in DC!

TPMS will tell ya if it's low, but one ought be checking anyway monthly at least

my dealer does this free if you ask (and they'd notice any hose problems anyway during an oil change

Or you can check it yourself in 5 minutes.

Useless inspections where again they'd notice anything major while under the car changing the oil

Laughable it's even listed.

other than engine oil, what fluids? windshield wiper fluid? that's like a buck a gallon at walmart and easy to fill.

Everything else that uses fliuids should be a sealed system

For you and I perhaps, and it is laughable that it needs to be listed, but if you saw how many crazy floor mats people have in their cars it's crazy.

Not if you recall the lawsuits over the floor mats (all weather or anything else that might get kicked under the accelerator) a couple of years ago!
