ECU not reading TPMS sensors

I just got the car back from the stealership after getting the fuel thingy recall done. They looked into my problem with the TPMS in which the light would come on, though tires had correct pressure (even spare). Allegedly when it blinks for a minute or so, means there's an issue with the actual monitor. Well point being is, the ECU is not reading the sensors and the stealership wants $800 to strip my car from all aftermarket wiring (LED mirrors and ipod adapter) to then looking to what the problem is. Car's warranty is expired and I am looking for advise, the check system light is really annoying me.

Is it worth $800? Maybe they just need to be reprogrammed.?

Are you using another set of sensors? Or have you had this problem since your original set? Only reason i ask is because my TPMS sensors weren't reading after i changed out to a second set. I brought it to a dealership and they diagnosed it saying they think the TPMS are not functioning and i would need to buy a new set. The problem turned out to be that they didn't "initialize" the second set of TPMS and my car was still reading the original set. Basically i had two sets of TPMS programmed to my car, i was rolling on the second set but my car was set on the first set. I just had to toggle to the second set.

Toggle between sets, drive atleast 15 miles on either when you make the switch. If that doesnt work, visit a toyota dealership. They will reprogram your TPMS for alot cheaper.
And IF THAT doesnt work, then waste $800 if the light really bothers you. Not worth it IMO if you have to get rid of two mods, but then again I have the light right now and its annoying as hell lol

I write this assuming you've already tried all the basic stuff (reinitializing the sensors yourself, switching between set 1 and set 2 setting yourself, etc).

If so, find a tire shop that has the reader that can read each individual sensor. Pay them an hour of labor (probably 50-80 bucks) to check if they can get a solid reading from each sensor.

If one or more of em doesn't work, replace that sensor. Total cost will be less than 1/4 what the dealer wants to screw you out of.

if they ALL work, that's a bigger problem. but the least likely.

This is how I think everything started. I bought a second set, had those in the trunk sitting in a box... car must have picked them up automatically ... light came on. That was back in September when I came home on R&R (vacation). Now, the service manual does say, when the light blinks for a minute it is due to sensor failure. I took it to a small tire shop near my base in Camp Lejeune, NC and they told me the sensors themselves were working, but the computer was not picking them up. Took them yesterday to dealership, guy said the same thing. So, they want to strip my car from all aftermarket wiring and then run diagnose (4-6 hours labor) to find out what my problem is. The money is not the problem, the problem is to me, who in their infinite wisdom thinks tapping two wires AFTER the fact (light came on before the mods). I will see what the Toyota guys say when I stop by. Though, must people give me a weird look when I take a Lexus to a Toyota dealership.

the car doesn't do that.

The car has no idea any given sensor exists until a programmer is hooked up to the car and the individual serial # of each new sensor is added to the car.

If you sensors are working properly then the issue is either the system isn't receiving the signals for some reason (and the aftermarket wiring would have to be ruled out to diagnose that officially), or there's something wrong with the ECU itself.

Kurtz so you are saying I should remove my aftermarket mods completely and have the dealership run the diagnose??? I wouldn't mind if running the cables for the LED mirrors wasn't that much of a PITA ..

well, it'd certainly knock a lot of $ off the bill that way since the dealer won't be the one spending hours pulling that stuff off.

While I agree that it's UNLIKELY it has anything to do with the issue I also understand the dealers perspective.

You could probably find a non-dealership who would try and diagnose without regard to unrelated wiring but, especially if it's a complex issue with a Lexus specific system it makes an accurate diagnosis less likely. Still might be worth a shot if there's some local place with a good rep for out-of-warranty work on modern Lexus vehicles though. (ie not 2JZ performance shop)

go to a tire shop and hope they have the Lexus tool to reprogram your TPMS, it should cost about $100 or less.

Went to the tire shop actually two different ones with both sets of sensors and the system will not read the programmer attempting to input either set of sensors
