Default Cannot shift into 'S'. Please advise

Hi Guys, have a question - today, after owning this car for several years, i decided to try the triptronic. I tried shifting the into 'S' but the lever would not move from 'D'. I tried a little force and it would still not move to the left (from D). I did not want to use too much force not to break it.

What could be the issue?

Thanks

Pop off the little shift lock and with the car on and foot on the brake, see if the shifter will move into 'S'

the little plastic covering could be snagged on something inside. try removing your center panel. a search of the DIY for installing a flyaudio or navi hack will show you how

I just removed the little plastic shif lock cover and nothing changed. I can shift to D and it would not move left to S. What is this shift lock cover suppose to do?

the cover just makes it flush with the rest of the console. Maybe I should have been more clear, there is a little button under the cover which is the shift lock. hold it down and see if the shifter will shift

Just did that. Removed the cover and pressed the button while moving the shifter. Still does not move to S.

this is from tim817's navi hack. check to see if the plastic has something stuck there keeping you from shifting into S

But if you have the ML this hack will enable the DVD screen to play when your car is moving.

Here's the DYI step by step:

Duration: 30 minutes
1.)Remove the sliver pieces to the right and left of the wood trim on either side ot the shifter....they are simply held in with clips, they come out up/back diagonally

2.) Re move the shift **** by turning it counterclockwise.

3.)Remove the shifter plate assembly by opening the ashtray door and pull up with your fingers (i slid the armrest back) it is also held in with simple clips.

You think something got stock in there? I was thinking that I am doing something wrong... I started the car, pressed the brake and tried shifting to S and is stops so abruptly as if it's not suppose to move left (from D). I hope it's not a serious problem...

Want to thank you for your advice. I followed the pics and removed the wood cover and guess what - a penny got stock in the 'S' spot.

Thank you again.
