Default 09 is250 awd oil filter question

i just bought a 09 is250 awd a few months ago and today i did the oil change on it for the first time. The new filter comes with a plastic piece but when i removed my old oil filter from the car it didn't have one. So i didnt know what to do with the plastic piece so i left it off. Will this cause a problem for me?

Throw the plastic piece away, it isn't used on the IS. The same filter is used on a number of different vehicles, some of which use that plastic piece to drain the oil from the filter housing before removing it.

^^ What he said. The only thing you need is the paper filter and the rubber gasket.

You both are incorrect. The AWD filter housing is similar to the ES350/RX350 housing. It has a 3/8 drive that you take off first, use the plastic piece to drain the housing, then reinstall. Then you loosen the actual housing to remove the paper element.

The AWD filter kit comes with a filter element, plastic drain, small o-ring, and large o-ring.

the first time i did my oil and didnt use the clear plastic piece...just made a messy oil change.

the second time i used the plastic piece and actually took off the first bolt. it did help the oil drain and made a clean oil change. i also found........THE WAS NO SMALL GASKET!!!! stupid dealerships.

With my IS350, there is no plastic piece or bolt, but I still get a clean oil change. I just loosen the filter housing a bit and the oil from the filter housing drains into the catch pan that I've positioned below. When it's stops dripping, I unscrew it the rest of the way and dump the paper element and the rest of the oil into the catch pan. (The catch pan has screening over it, so the paper element doesn't fall in - it just sits on the screen and drains.)

I have an I250 and there are two gaskets. One for the "drain plug", ie plastic part used to drain the oil (its the 14/15mm bolt on the filter housing. And the larger one for the main housing. I obviously replace both but no you will not damage your car if you dont use it. Its literally just suppose to make your oil change less messy. thats about it. lol.

does anyone have any pictures of how the plastic piece goes in the filter housing? i would like to use it next time. Does the plastic piece go inside the filter or outside when you remove the bolt?

no pictures but when you use your 14/15mm to take off the first bolt...it goes in there. just take the plastic piece and jam the slotted end into the hole. also, if you get the oil filter, look on the box. there is a diagram if i remember correctly.

illustrations should be on the oil filter box. And remember horizontal mount oil filters don't have the drip fitting, vertical mount filters do. My F (horizontal mount) doesn't, my wife's ES (vertical mount) does.

RWD uses 04152-YZZA3, it comes with the filter and one o-ring.
AWD uses 04152-YZZA5, it comes with the filter, two o-rings, and the drain adapter.

The filter itself and the larger o-ring is the same between the two.

The RWD and AWD are a different setup, the RWD drains through a slot when you unscrew the cap, the AWD is meant to drain when you remove the plug, since it's mounted vertically instead of horizontally.
