Default Squeaks, rattles, creaks - Silicon Spray solution

Hey Guys,

Probably an obvious post, but wanted to share my experience.

After 4 years, I started hearing some extra squeaks, creaks, and rattles around my car...so over the last few weeks I've really been trying to isolate them.

Last night, i lubricated every piece of weather stripping...4 doors and sunroof with 3M silicon lubricant...wet type.

There was a 75% reduction of all interior noises. Most importantly, the one right next to my left ear was finally gone!

I also notice some creaks from the center console. if I push on the side of it, it creaks a lot. i can notice this when cornering and going over bumps. I sprayed the lubricant into all the joints i could find. The biggest difference was made where the wood trim meets the plastic side of the console. Took me a little while to clean up all the overspray, but definitely worth the effort....night and day difference.

Might be an exaggeration, but feels like a new car. Definitely much closer to how I drove it off the lot (minus the TSB dash rattle fix)

So give it a shot...can't hurt. I got the 3M silicon spray from amazon, but any silicon based lubricant should do...even tire shine. The reason I use 3M is because I trust every product they've ever made. Brand loyalty I guess.

I'm also having the dashboard rattling - I had the TSIB performed but it didn't fix the problem completely. The rattling is coming from the center of the dashboard near where it meets the windshield, so not near anywhere where wood trim meets the dash.

Can you elaborate (or a pic would be great) on where exactly you sprayed to solve specifically the dash rattle issue?

Calvin,

I didnt use the spray for the dash rattle. The TSB solved that. are you still under warranty? bring it back. I brought mine in there twice before it was fixed to my liking.

I only used the spray for the weather stripping and the center console.

And jnguyen87, it really wasn't that bad. Took the heavy over spray off with shop towels then a microfiber cloth to remove the fine stuff. I didn't spray the weather stripping. I sprayed the lubricant onto a sponge then wiped down the weather stripping.

not sure if the silicone will "eat" into the weather strip?

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Did they do anything differently the second time around to get the issue fully fixed? Because I've already had it in there twice, and they're saying now that they've done the fix listed in the TSIB and can't do any non Lexus-approved fixes.

guess we'll find out!

At least you have a guinea pig

No, here are the details from 3M's website:

"A high solids, high viscosity aerosol lubricant designed for lubricating moving parts, and eliminating squeaks caused by friction. Protects against rust and corrosion, seals out moisture, and preserves plastics, rubber, vinyl, leather, etc.
Provides a long wet appearance and increases sliding and lubricating qualities
Does not contain petroleum oils
Will not stain or become gummy"

I am fortunate to have 3 lexus dealerships around where i live and where i work. I originally brought it back to the dealer I bought it from and it wasnt fixed well. They said they did something with the dash clips.

The second dealer I brought it to fixed it perfectly. There are some clips that hold the dash down near where the windshield meets it. I saw them when I had my windshield replaced. What they did is wrapped the clips with felt. This either made them tighter, or just muted the rattle. Either way...it worked.

When is the last time you brought it back? There is a TSB for this. Maybe you can print it out and show them. For each TSB, I send the PDF to my Service Advisor to make sure we're talking about the same thing and confirming that this is the process they're going to follow.
