Oh em jee! I like totallllly did this mod last year. (Previous sentence to be read in a catty girl's voice. It's not like having your shift **** sit lower is something you can patent guys, relax.)

Using my FSport **** I use a 1/4 drill bit and drilled the hole inside the **** to pass thru the plastic cap that limits the insertion of the **** and here it is. No cutting DYI.
You don't need to do anything, just keep twisting the **** until it looks like so (picture taken several months ago):
