Default Damn Potholes!

Hey guys. So I'm regularly changing my front tires (I have stock 18" rims. X-package to be exact) cuz of potholes. When I had the stock summer tires they were no issue. But ever since I started using the all-seasons (Conti), theyre just not holding up to the potholes as well. I try to avoid as much as I can, but you're bound to hit some in the NJ/NY area (especially in the winter!). Thank goodness my rims are still intact.

Anywho, currently I'm using the regular tire size 225/40/18.

Has anyone ever considered getting one with a slightly taller sidewall? Say 225/45/18? Would there be any significant drawbacks if I did this? Wanted to get everyone's take here since I know there are a lot of people more well-informed than I am.

Thanks,
-Ryan

I run 235/40/18 up front which is similar in tirewall height as 225/45/18 and I still bend my rims either way lol

Sorry I'm no help on the tire issue

Just had to say, I guess Houston streets arent as bad as i thought... Never bent a stock rim or my current setup with the low-pro tires.

Run summer tires and be extra careful? haha Probably not a good idea, but Ive never even seen snow, so i have no idea how bad that would go. :P

probably you need a tire that has thicker side wall? Mich a/s or Goodyear?

I used to use stock too but my tire got killed by a huge pothole when I visited NY.
Now I have Hankook V4. I think the sidewall on hankook isn't any thicker than stock. I already have bubble on it on PA roads.

I have used Michelin, Yokohama, General, and Bridgestone low profile tires on the same roads and the only one to crap out was the bridgestone. The rear passenger tire (of all) which was under no load since the car had nothing in the trunk, no passengers, just me. That too by simply hitting a manhole that is there since the last 10 years at 40mph within the city limits.

i hit a fresh pothole on 1/1/11. Both Bridgestone tires on the driver side are gone. Dealer told me that no matter what tires you have, as long as you have low profile, you gotta be careful. I am driving no faster than 30 mph ever since 1/1/11. I can't spend $800 to replace the whole set once in a while.

Currently running on Sumitomo 225/40/18. The tire seems to be quieter than the Bridgestone.

So guys, basically the reason I've been wanting to stick to Conti is because they have a manufacturer warranty that comes w/ all their tires for free. If anything happens to the tire within 12 months and within I believe 25ish % treadwear, you can take it to a local certified Conti dealer and get it changed for just the cost of mounting and balance. I've done this 3 times already!

But aside from that, the main reason is because (aside from the awesome reviews on tire rack) I found the conti's to have the highest weight rating for an all season performance. I figured that means they could handle pot holes best?! But now I'm not so sure????

i am running x-package wheels with 225/50/18 tires. They were rubbing a bit in front on turns, but I just took a heat gun to the wheel well liner toward the rear of the car where it sticks out, 10 min fix and no rubbing now.
