Default Can you Add (navigation)

A navigation system to the lexus is250/350 after you've already purchased it without the system?
I kind of want to purchase a is350 on sale in my area, but it doesn't have a nav system, or any other stuff i've seen on the lexus website. =/
I kind of don't know what it has at all..
So is it possible to buy the centerconsole for the Lexus and have it professionally done by someone? and if yes, then will it be very expensive?
What do you guys recommend that a Lexus SHOULD have...?

and in this picture http://www.74auto.com/images/07is350/41.jpg
What does the S stand for?
Standard? Sport?

Sorry for sounding like an idiot, i'm just trying to educate myself about a car that i'm dearly in love with.

Dont know what it stands for but its a way to switch over and use paddle mode - like a manual without a clutch. I assume it means sport.

adding a nav as if it came with the car would be pretty expensive.

also I believe a lexus should have a driver who appreciates the car for the way it drives not the way it should drive. For the latter I would tell someone to go buy a ricer.

Paddle mode on the ISx50 is -nothing- like a manual without a clutch.

That would be M mode on an IS-F, the ISx50 has nothing like that.

The paddles in S mode work as a top gear limiter. This can fool some people into thinking they are shifting the car, but they're not... the only thing they're ever doing is changing the allowed range of gears the fully automatic transmission is allowed to use.

To the original poster- you CAN buy the nav parts later and pay someone to install them but it's going to be stupid expensive.

My suggestion? Buy without nav.

Then instead of spending $3000 on OEM nav, spend $300 on a Garmin Nuvi that does considerably more than the OEM unit does (realtime traffic, lane assist, etc...) Even better it's $99 for lifetime map updates versus $300/yr for Lexus OEM nav updates.

S is the Sport. It's the B - Level package on the IS350.

It's the same as the luxury (C - Level) package without the Navigation, ML Sound system, and Backup camera.

I believe the sport also has tighter suspension and aluminum pedals.

The Lexus nav package is nothing to write home about... unless you're writing to complain about not being able to use it while driving. Supposedly the unit alone costs $10,000 at list.

Get a Garmin. Much cheaper initial cost, better interface, cheaper updates, can take it with you on vacation, can use it while driving.

Oh and to add to the comment above. The paddles are a gimmick. Nothing like a manual. In fact, I once shifted into S by accident once, and drove for 10 minutes before I realized something was different. (If your revs go too high it will automatically upshift for you.)

The original poster doesn't live in Canada as you do, so all of the above info doesn't apply to him.

In the US both Nav (which always comes with the backup cam) and ML have nothing to do with the other packages on the car for one.

BTW he was asking about the S on the dashboard, not as part of option packages.

I -am- a big fan of the sport package though (as it comes in the US anyway) since it gives you all the good stuff in the lux package without the woodgrain, and adds the sport suspension and pedals, all for $500 less than the Lux package.

I guess I shoulda done a little more research before purchasing. I had little interest in the Nav/Backup camera. I went lux solely for the ML system and was under the impression that was the only way to get it.

Just curious, which package in the states has radar cruise and parking assist. Neither of those are available in Canada.

No package- both are stand-alone options... the radar cruise is called PCS (pre collision system) since besides the radar cruise feature if the radar guesses you're about to crash it'll do stuff like boost the brakes, tighten the seatbelts, prime the airbags, etc... Mark Levinson also isn't included in any of the standard packages in the US, you can either get it totally alone, or together with nav (or nav without ML), but none are part of any packages.

Honestly I wouldn't be able to drive this car without the built-in navigation system. At the very least it wouldn't be as fun. It does more than just tell you where to go. The OEM nav screen also controls the audio and climate control. I'm sure you can do most of that with buttons, but I love my touch screen. If you can find one with nav, I say go for it.

What are we in? 20th century?

Your position is obviously one sided. You are bias since maybe you regret not getting a navi in your car. Does your garmin include a built in bluetooth that pause the music automatically when your are using the phone? does it have rear camera? can you watch DVD on it? can you accept calls/end call on the steering wheel? Not to mention, it makes the interior look like ***. (picture attached on the bottom). Don't you have to take it off every time you park fearing someone will break your window and steal it? And the wires running down your dash to connect into the 12V looks

People have done it, it's possible, but a lot of work.

I special ordered my car, and paid cash. I explicitly went out of my way to avoid the crappy OEM nav system, which is the thing really stuck in the 20th century.

My Garmin (which does have bluetooth) also has realtime traffic, which saves me a lot more time than the 10 seconds it takes me to put it in the center console when I park it.... the crappy OEM system doesn't have that feature so I guess you need to watch DVDs on it while you're stuck in the traffic I avoided.

Further, nav doesn't play DVDs either unless you paid $4000 for it (ML plus Nav..the stock $2500 nav doesn't do it).... and then it won't do it unless you're in park, unless you wanna hack up your wiring harness.... and then watching them while driving is not only -stupid- it's illegal in many states.

(I do have ML by the way, just not the crappy OEM nav)

Plus, I paid $99 for lifetime map updates... versus the $300 a year you're gonna be stuck paying to Lexus for map updates.

Plus I get lane assist, another feature the antique OEM system lacks... it also tells me the speed limit of whatever road I'm on, lets me download custom POI databases for redlight cameras and speed traps, plays audiobooks and MP3s, and it lets me plan long trips on my desktop PC then download custom routes and POIs to the GPS.

True I don't have a backup camera- If I wanted to spend another 10% of what you paid for OEM nav I could've gotten an aftermarket nav with a backup camera too... Fortunately my neck works...I'm sorry to hear yours does not. If I was driving a huge truck I could understand the need for a rear camera, instead I bought a small sport sedan.

And and it'll run 4 or 5 hours at a time on battery if your self worth is really destroyed by running a power wire.

Plus, it lets me have real physical buttons to change my climate and radio settings directly so I'm not wasting time switching screens to make adjustments like you are, or switching screens just to see what is set at what, it's all clearly displayed for me at once on my superior non-nav interior

Plus, of course, the extra couple thousand bucks I saved to get a system that does a lot more and works better... and I can take it on trips to use in rental cars too.

I REGRETED not getting navigation into my IS, that's not a lie. The IS seemed okay without NAV but with the NAV SYSTEM, it seems like its the ultimate package and more of a semi luxury car. After adding the NAV with ML, i get so many compliments from the people that ride in the car with me.

I could of went with an aftermarket nav, but i didn't want the cords and i always see people in those little cars with them mounted on their dash or window and thought it looked stupid. PERSONAL OPINION, THIS STATEMENT WAS NOT INTENDED TO OFFEND OR MAKE FUN OF ANYONE WITH AN AFTERMARKET NAV. mine could be considered aftermarket as well since i didnt purchase it with the car.

its the same reason why i went the extra step when purchasing a radar, i bought the wireless escort, thinking of the valentine but still the wires will be hidden after the install.

i think its the personal choice.

OPTION 1: youll keep your car stock, wont have to worry about the warranty issues and have a nice simple install. you wont have bluetooth of the ability to watch movies or the camera, but your pockets will appreciate it and to some these are not necessities.

OPTION 2: big *****, forget everything, upgrade yourself. go with any NAV system you want and get that bad baby put in the dash, there's tons of options just depends on how much you want to spend.

Custom install aftermarket probably around 2K

Nav Retrofit 2k

LIKE I SAID BEFORE ITS A PERSONAL CHOICE, SOME DONT MIND THE GARMIN. I LOVE MY CAR AND THOUGHT THE GIFT OF AN OEM NAV WAS CHARMIN.
