Default Need some input/help.. Fast!!!!!

I was driving on the highway late at night in the rain and something from the road went through my grill and crushed my radiator and some other stuff in the car. This caused the car to overheat and now there is little to no compression in the engine. The repairs are covered under my insurance claim, but I am not sure exactly what to do.

The dealership originally proposed an estimate around $17,000 to repair everything(very little body damage). When the insurance adjuster showed up they agreed to put a used JARCO engine from Japan in instead of rebuilding the engine for about $11,000. I am thinking about paying the difference and getting a whole new engine, but dont know how much that is going to be. I am worried about the resale value if I rebuild or drop a used engine in.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

What would 3K more get me? Dont know if having the engine rebuilt is actually better than the JARCO.

Damn thats a hard one. I would go with JARCO, but its going to take a long time to get it to your place, whereas the dealership will repair faster. Hopefully your insurance will cover your rental for a month or longer.. GL.. keep us updated please!!

They said it would only take a few days to mail the engine and it has less mileage than my current engine, but still not sure how it will effect my resale. May try for some diminished value from the insurance company.

depends on how long you are going to have the car. If you are going to sell the car, a replaced engine will show up on the history report and kill the resell value. You may look at just trading the car in for new one. If you are going to drive the car for long time than rebuild engine might be better because you will have a full idea on the history. You may not have to pay the 3k if you talk to your insurance. Tell them, that you do not feel comfortable with a used engine.

I'm a bit surprised it wasn't totaled. is the $17K estimate with the cheaper used engine or a complete rebuild?

Not sure what the guideline is in FL, but that's a lot for a repair.

To total it I think it needs to be 75% of the value of the car

Since the JARCO is an option, the value is to low to claim it totaled. I think the rebuild is also to low to total it anyway. I have heard that the engine will never be the same and I will have constant problems either way. Anyone know how much it will hurt the resale value?
