my sister crashed my parents new suv into a tree and i think the damage was near $14,000 w/ the airbags out and pieces everywhere..and to be considered totalled it needs to be 70-75% and it was 60%..was a 3.5 v6 ford edge loaded..don't smoke n drive, especially wen its not cigs. hope she learned that smoking can kill without airbags..uyyy i would jus take the JARCO engine..screw it.

since repairing the engine could still lead to future problems, i'd just go with the JARCO. I don't have any idea what it is or how it's different but fewer miles and it's not damaged. Therefore, I am thinking that you would save yourself some PITA by getting the JARCO, because if you really think about it, the repair will take just as long as getting it shipped in. Hope all goes smoothly.. : D

I wonder if there is any way to convince the insurance company that they should just pay for me to have a new engine put it. May have to pay some of the difference, but may be worth it in the long run. I also have an extended Lexus warranty on the car and not sure if that will cover the JARCO motor

Whatever you decide, make sure you get a LEXUS, WRITTEN, warranty with the new engine for at least 50,000 miles. If you get a JARCO, you don't know where it's been - they claim to have low mileage cream-puff engines (and I have "land in florida" i'd like to sell you) but you need more than just pixie dust before you pay someone $11000!

lol isn't this an enthusiast site? where's the guys to come in and say, take the insurance money, buy your own used engine somewhere as cheap as you can and take it to a real race shop to start beefing up the internals for some serious boost?

I would pressure the insurance to total the vehicle. What year is it?

Also, the insurance calculates the value at the average selling price. So, let say you have a 2008 IS350. The total amount of damage would have to exceed 75% of $33,000. That mean it would have to be more than $24,750.00 in repair.

Now, you can argue that since the engine is being replaced, and the value of the vehicle will no longer be even remotely close to the same as possible with using a low mileage engine (JARCO) that they review totaling the car.

Assuming you want it totaled.

Now, if you don't. I would recommend rebuilding the engine. If you swap motors, they will rivet a serial number for the new engine VIN in your door jam, and firewall. They will then report this to the Motor Vehicle Division, which will then report to Carfax and every insurance company. You can basically kiss your vehicles resale value down the toilet since it will not have "verifiable" mileage anymore. oh, they will tell you that's not true. But call any local dealer and tell them you want to trade in your car and it has an aftermarket Lexus engine. I am willing to bet most, if not all, wont take it.

So, long story short. Rebuild it. Or total it.

Do you have GAP coverage?

Default Anyone know how to determine Diminished Value?

Accident occured in GA and my policy is in FL. Engine went bad and trying to see how much my 2007 IS 250 with 20,000 will be diminished in value if I put in a used engine instead of a new one.

Wait wait wait.. you hit 'something' that crushed your radiator, that led the car to overheat... that now led to $17,000 in damages..

my question is.. If you had noticed that something damaged your car and the temp is going up, why didn't you stop the car and get it towed?

The value of the car would go down significantly. I suggest trading it in for a new car and not have to deal with selling this thing later.
