If anything use 3M Mounting Tape that is rated at a 5lb hold strength..just leave it off. I just pay the $20 every couple months that I get caught..big deal

This is an excellent idea, as well as AceFalcon's tow-hook suggestion. Please do not tape your license plate to your bumper.

^Why not? Double sided tape is strong enough to hold lip kits and the like onto your car - it's more than strong enough to hold your front license plate on, especially in California. It works fine for license plates, and I've personally seen the 3M stuff last for years:

Technically, it's a sound idea. I have no doubt that 3M tape will grip that sucker to the bumper just like a lip kit. But that's the problem, too.

I guess it depends on what problem the tape is trying to solve. Do you want to keep the front bumper looking clean? I figured this was the intent, since the OP didn't have it drilled in the first place. Using Zip-ties or the tow-hook idea effectively displays the plate and provides flexibility if the plate needs to be relocated or removed.

3M tape effectively displays the plate, but it will be a pain to move and clean-up after. Plus, you'd be the guy who taped his license plate to his luxury car. Just doesn't seem like a right thing to do, but that's me.

Comments welcome!

Well, the tape is invisible - you'd place it behind the plate. Zip ties, on the other hand, are VERY visible and VERY ghetto. Also the 3M tape I just posted a picture of isn't hard to remove - it peels right off. Remember, OP is in California - we don't have to deal with the subb-zero temps you guys get in MD...

The red 3M tape caked on a few years it does NOT peel right off. Trust me. You can use black zip ties and those are less visible plus it cuts right off which is easier imo.

Except the tape in this case wouldn't be on for years - it would be only temporary. Otherwise OP would just mount it with screws. Again, just my opinion, but I wouldn't have any reservations using the 3M tape.

using zip ties is what i would do. problem is that even if you zip tie your plate to the front of your car and get caught by CHP they can say that it needs to be bolted via screws or bolts to the front of your car.

Northern Virginia, actually. But not that it matters, it's still cold as ballz.

Just do a search on "tow hook license plate" and you'll find the thread. Good luck with your decision!
