Cable Chains on AWD? Anyone?
Has anyone ever used chains/cables on an AWD? It's been snowing here in Oregon and it's required on freeways/highways...and haven't been able to get to work. Anyone ever done this, if so, does the chains go on the front or the back?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hey Oregon - Can relate to the same weather here in Bellevue, WA., but proabably not as severe as your weather.
Lucky for us our lawmakers are not as paranoid as yours, to make everyone use chains, or cables.
I dont know where you would put them on an AWD vehicle, my IS350 is RWD, but your manual will tell you or you can call the Dealer..
Biggest advice I can tell you is that if you put them on and they are chains especially, do not, repeat, do not, drive on roads that are not covered in snow, or you will ruin them and they might get hot enough to come off or partially off and bang up your car or worse yet fly off into the highway and cause some trouble for someone else.
And please dont be like some dork that stopped in the right lane of a freeway and started removing his chains, and wondered why another car came up and smacked into him..
You either use them on snow or dont use them at all. They are not made to be used on bare pavement.
They are not intended to be used at high speeds either. Your snow by now may be not too bad Im guessing. None of our secondary streets have ever been plowed so we have biggest difficulty just getting to the freeway which is for the most part plowed and clean for now.
Good luck, be really careful, be really smooth with input to the steering wheel and the gas and the brakes and you should be ok.
Try to not take off in a low gear because that will cause wheelspin which is way harder to get traction with. If you have a stick shift, taking off in a higher gear will almost always work better on snow or ice. Its all about momentum, and keeping it going and then planning on downshifting to get rid of it before you have to use brakes, gently, if possible so you dont start to lose traction and skid.
Good luck with this.. Merry Christmas !! DanF
