Any chance it would be covered by your insurance?

Lexus windshiled for me. I think that there's a sensor for the automatic wipers in the windshield. Make sure you don't have this option if you go after market.

Isn't insurance supposed to cover the windshield by law with no deductible??

There is a sensor in the windshield for the auto wipers. I'm not sure if aftermarket glass co's would have that feature or not. I don't think they would, but I could be wrong.

the automatic wiper sensor is not in the glass.. its behind the rear view mirror which is up against the glass.

The sensor uses a special tape to allow the glass on the sensor to "scan" the surface of the glass. The tape basically extends the "scan area" to the outside of the windshield. If the tape were to be reused or improperly installed the sensor will scan between the sensor and the inside of the windshield and keep operating the wipers. So you must ALWAYS replace the rain sensor tape anytime the sensor is removed and reinstalled either onto an old or new glass.

The rain sensor's bracket is part of the glass. The glass comes with the sensor from factory or as a replacement glass. If you were to purchase a new a/m windshield the brakcet probably won't come with it. removing and reinstalling the bracket, even with rear view mirror adhesive, would cause the bracket to fall off. I've tried sanding the bracket's surface to make the epoxy bite it and it still won't adhere to the a/m glass. Even if you try to do it several times you're out the cost of the rain sensor tape ($~25) everytime.

IMO, if you have rain sensing wipers the only windshield you can use if the OEM Lexus. Do it once, do it right and forget about the frustations in the future.

If it's just a scratch, and not a crack, isn't there a process to repair the existing windshield?

EDIT: Found a link, but it sounds like more than I'd want to mess with:

I've heard you could try to use toothpaste and a brush to "polish" out the scratch.
