Quote: Yep, I'm planning on conventional oil (per spec) at 7K miles/6 months in my IS350.
I would do 5K for dino oil....

No problem, I've seen the tests on dino oil lholding up well over 7K miles. Also some cars are running up to 10K miles on dino oil per manufacturer recommendation.

I myself am on the same boat as some of the people asking questions on this thread. I would like to use Mobil 1 in my recently purchased 2008 IS 350, but am wondering how to go about longer oil changes.

caymandive's suggestion here (and Knightshade's suggestion on my.is) are how I will probably go:
Quote: #2. Change the filter only and you will lose some oil with it. Just top it off when you install the new filter.
I've never done my own oil change before but will probably start now. Thanks brel523 for this:
Quote: Spin, here is a link to my first oil change experience and DIY guide.

It's really easier than it looks/sounds and WAY cheaper than the dealer.

There are no Mobil 1 filters for 2GR and 4GR engines. They use a cartridge, not a spin-on filter. AFAIK, the only option is the OEM filter.
..
Ah, thanks for this. I had always wondered why you couldn't just get a better filter to go longer with the Mobil 1 oil's extended life.

Since I would have to drive up on ramps, get under car, remove oil filter and let drain, put it all back together. Why wouldn't I just change the oil while I'm under there(other than cost of oil)? Removing one more bolt is a breeze and I already have oil container there.

I guess I'm saying, if I go to all that trouble to change the filter at 5k, I mind as well change the oil. Other than cost of oil, am I missing something?
.....
That cost of oil is pretty significant though right? You're saving $40 or so would be my guess - how many quarts of Mobil 1 would you need?

Quote: I live in the south and it hardly ever gets really cold here. I've always used 10w-30 in my cars so it's probably more habit than anything. I'm guessing 5w-20 and 5w-30 are good average numbers for Lexus to use to cover everyones car no matter their avg. temp....
Quote: Lexus recomends 5-20/5-30, but thats only a recomendation, i live in hawaii, what do i need 5w oil for? those nites when we wear our fleece lined levis jackets and its 65f outside?....
...
Lexus recommends those viscosities not just for cold start performance, but also for better fuel economy. As I recall, the language in the owner's manual says that 10W-30 can be used if 5W-30 isn't available, but they recommend switching back at the next change. From the Blackstone UOA reports that folks have posted, it doesn't look like there is any need to fear depleting the viscosity improvers in the 5W-30 and 5W-20 grades even with extended drain intervals.
ah, thanks for this clarification.
