Lexus recommends those viscosities not just for cold start performance, but also for better fuel economy. As I recall, the language in the owner's manual says that 10W-30 can be used if 5W-30 isn't available, but they recommend switching back at the next change. From the Blackstone UOA reports that folks have posted, it doesn't look like there is any need to fear depleting the viscosity improvers in the 5W-30 and 5W-20 grades even with extended drain intervals.

At 7 or 8K miles send out a sample (Add TBN test $32.50 total) to Blackstone for used oil analysis and indicate you plan on an extended change. They will tell you how much life is left in the oil. I doubt you will need to change the filter at 5K miles. Why guess at how long it will last. You would only need to test once.

PS Next change go with a 0w-20 pure synthetic!

I just had my free 5K mile change done. I will dump it with 3K miles. I would have put the Amsoil ASM in already but the extra (Free) change will help clear the break-in debris. I will run it 8K miles and then test it to see how long I can safely run it. Some UOAs have come back for the new ASM oil and it looks like great stuff.

Well ASM can't be worst than Mobil1 EP which is what I'm currently running. From reading on Bitog it seems it is not even a full synthetic. Most of it is highly refined regular oil.

ASM is 100% synthetic (Group IV-V) Mobil 1 has group III in its base stock.

With higher mileage oil...the detergent level is increased to allow infrequent oil changes...the real benifit on the oil change is to remove spent detergent and the byproducts from the combustion process...most of us like to change more frequently, feeling better that the contamination level stays at a minium for a lesser chance of sludge build up. I say the product (mobil 1 EP) should do what it specifiys with the higher detergent level, allowing longer service times..but if you feel better changing it sooner...then why not. I myself like between 5000-7000K between service...depending on my lazyness mood. Always with synthetic oil....so this allows me to get it done when I "feel" like it. My 2 cents!

I do 90% highway driving if that makes any difference.

Here is a few links to Mobil 1's FAQ on their Extended Performance oils just to give you an idea of they oil and their claims.

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...erformance.asp
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ance_FAQs.aspx

I realize I will get responses from "change it every 3k, better safe than sorry" to "change it when you want, it's your car" to "don't use Mobil 1" to "yeah, should be fine to change at 10k".

I guess I'm looking for confirmation from your guys based on your past knowledge and the manufacturers statement on 15k oil change interval that running up to 7.5k or 10k intervals shouldn't cause a problem.

I'm just trying to optimize my oil change interval based on the oil I'm using. Why change it at 5k if the oil is good for 10k or 15k?

Also, didn't see this type of post before or in the search so sorry if it's been answered.

Thanks guys!

My basic rule of thumb is double Manufactuers recommended oil change mileage interval for conventional oil and use Mobil 1 full synthetic of same viscosity

10K miles or 1 year is the magic (safe) numbers.

Yep, I'm planning on conventional oil (per spec) at 7K miles/6 months in my IS350.

I tried that route on my G35 and I had issues with oil consumption. Not safe if you like to tap the rev limiter while dusting the BMW driver

Solution is to keep oil topped off between changes.
