Glad your shoulder is getting better Nixietink. Don’t feel bad about the accident. Everyone makes mistakes. I also rear ended a car once by not fully paying attention of what was ahead of me.
I believe the difference between good and bad drivers are the good ones learns from their mistakes.

Nixietink, if it makes you feel any better...
... most of us have gone through this too.
My very first auto accident... involved a parked vehicle too. I did even something more stupid and didn't look behind me when I backed up and was too busy talking with my friend in the car. I backed straight into the side of a green Dodge Caravan and crumpled the front driver quarter-panel and driver-side door.
The old addage goes "Learn from your mistakes." For me, that's changed to "Learn from other people's mistakes." But learning from your own mistakes is usually more effective than learning from other people's mistakes.

Cheers,
Kermee
P.S. My accident happened in front of my school's Headmaster too. It was embarassing. I left my contact info and insurance company info on the guy's windshield and took off.

Most of you are tryin to help, but do just that, help. If your unsure, it just leads to more confusion.

My friend "forgot" to mention the word "half" in "half-totaled" (which seems like a pointless word IMO) to me until I asked him recently. Also, we are not the OP's insurance, the OP has the choice of believing whatever we say on here. We are all posting on this forum using what we know and we are trying to help. That doesn't mean that whatever we say here is a fact of life. For example, I think the VDIM disable trick was accidently discovered when someone mentioned something about it with the Avalon manual? Point is, sometimes "unsure" comments lead to solutions and truth. If the OP really wanted to know what the % was for a car being considered "totaled" he could have just called his insurance and gotten an estimate.
The vdim is irrelivent as the first post stated: Totaled or not, that was the question.

Before the VDIM there are two words.... "For example." I think it's relevant in order to make it clear that "unsure" statements can be of use which in this case COULD be of help to the OP. People should try to understand what a sentence is trying to convey rather than saying that the words IN the sentence are irrelevant. As for the point of restoring a car back to near perfect condition... it's still difficult. I'm not saying it's impossible or if chances are low... it's just that most people don't do a good job unless it's their own car that they're working on. All I can say is I hope you find a good place that can restore your car back to a condition where you won't notice anything misaligned or if the paint isn't as good as it was stock.

The more I've been on this forum, the more mature the drivers are it seems when I read posts like these.
Glad you are ok though, there is a % of damage that needs to be done in order for it to be totalled like the other member stated... depends on your insurance company.

Who else was he/she going to blame it on?
And for the record, is the OP female? Just trying to further perpetuate the female driver stereotypes
JK, glad the OP is doing OK and hope things turn out for the best

Regardless, airbag deployment = totalled. I've never heard of an insurance co. not totalling a car where the airbags have deployed.

I don't know about the rest of you, but even though this is only an "online forum" I don't expect it to be full of conjecture and gossip. When someone says "it's a fact" or "i know for sure" then we expect it to be the truth and not just someone's opinion. Of course, we can read the whole statement and get the real point but if someone says "insurance companies always give you the right to total your car or not, it's up to the owner".....people should comment.
I've been on forums where a bunch of people who thought they knew what they were talking about were always chiming in with "the answer". If we expect the dozens of visitors to take this forum seriously and use this forum as a reliable resource, those who are responsible (mods and others) will promptly correct someone when they "say what's on their mind" and come off as being the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Don't get me know, I'll be the first to tell you I've been wrong on several ocassions but I think we would be remiss if we didn't challenge some (not all) of the statements posted on here.
My 2 cents.
