Default Where is the extra 14th speaker??

Does anyone know where the extra 14th speaker is on the ML sound system? And side by side, does the ML system REALLY sound that much better than the stock 13 speaker set up? Does the ML volume go to 11 instead of just 10 {ala Spinal Tap}?

I am waiting on my special order IS350, sports package only, and was just wondering. I tried to crank the stock sound sysytem on my test drive{s} to mask the constant droning comming from my sales people, but It didn't work.

I'm sure the 9 extra speakers from my current set up will sound pretty sweet though.

Center channel speaker, located on the top part of the dashboard.

I believe there are placement differences in some of the other 13 speakers too.

Remember, it's not just the extra speaker that makes the ML system. Speakers are better in ML and the amplification is a lot better (along with software).

I have listened to both system on the same cd. The ML is around 20% better in sound quality but music is best performed on 2.1 not 14 speakers....I heard that CD's are made best for a 2 channel system.

I believe, at least here in Canada, it is a dvd audio unit. At least that is what you have to access to play cd's. The voice act. does not recognize cd commands only dvd. If thats the case does that mean I should get better sound than the standard cd player?
As far as the difference in the 2 systems, I haven't really listened to the stock system, only during a test drive, but I'll say that the ML system doesn't sound much different. I'm not that impressed. I didn't have a choice because I ordered nav. which comes with the ML audio.
After my earlier post to-day I checked the difference between burned cd's (which I have been listening to) and bought cd's and I will say there is a noticeable difference.

Even in Canada, the base system comes with a cd changer, and the Levinson package comes with a DVD changer. Don't get confused by the DVD nav, which uses an entirely different drive (than the audio system) to hold the map DVD.

Also, although there is a package that includes both ML and Nav, the two are also available as separate options.

There's only 2 speakers in each of the rear doors, 14 total.

It might be a cd changer but every time I want to play a cd my dvd player comes up. There is no referance to cd at all, in the car. Not any of the buttons or voice act. respond to cd commands.
I don't know where you're getting your info because I have all options and packages right in front of me ( cdn. version) and you have to take the ml if you want navigation.

Bichon,

You are looking at the US packages. In Canada, the packages are more restrictive due to smaller market.

The Nav and the ML have to come together as a package for the IS350. Besides, Park Assist or PCS are not offered at all to the Canadian IS models. (It's available for the GS though)

For IS250AWD, you can only get the Nav alone but no ML in Canada

For IS250RWD, you can only get the non-Nav version and no ML in Canada.

Hope it will clear some confusion.

The ML is a DVD Audio unit. DVD Audio sound quality is definitely better than CD Audio, principally due to higher sound resolution (16bit 44KHz vs 24bit 96/192KHz, often in discrete surround).

Audiophile sound excellence, but... given that:
- you must find a good recording (a dvd audio cheap recording could sound worse than an audiophile cd recording)
- you have an excellent audio equipment to hear the differences (the whole chain from the player to the speakers)
- you listen at music that benefits those improvements
- you can hear the differences, as your ear is the best judge.
- and... your car is stopped quietly and not running offroad

Multi-channel music is ok if you r listen at pure, discrete multi-channel recordings (such as DVD Audio or SACD): I personally don't like dts neo or pro logic II surround elaborations...

BTW, give a look to this thread:

Default The speaker layout forms a 7.1 channel...

system. That's seven discrete sound images possible with a subwoofer which is omnidirectional. So now you will need a surround sound source of music to take advantage of this system. Sadly there are few examples unless you include DVD movies. SACD will playback in 2.1 on its backup track as it is not a compatible format. It still sounds very good on the Mark Levinson which also decreases total harmonic distortion. One of my favorite DVD audio sources is Blue Man Group which makes many of their own intruments and has a 6.1 DTS based recording and is fully realized on the Mark Levinson. Most surround sound will be of the 5.1 variety. The conundrum is that there is little availability of surround sound audio DVD's because there is a small market for it. There is a small market for surround sound playback devices because there is little available....MP3's rule but the quality is not the same as a DVD-A. Please try a movie with surround sound and you will be amazed at the potential of the system. Put the parking brake on to view it on the screen...Kill Bill has a good track either volume 1 or 2. If you can find a DVD-A to pop in the slot you will be rewarded with what car audio could be if it tried.

Sorry for spreading misinformation. Funny thing is, I actually went to http://wwwl.lexus.ca to verify that the base stereo had a CD changer and not a DVD player. Full of confidence that I got that one right, I never bothered to check the packages, despite the fact that the information was right in front of me. My bad.
