Taking delivery far away/break in procedure
Hi Gang!
I live in Miami and I most likely will pickup my IS in Clearwater.
How should I do with the first miles and break in?
I will be driving all the way back to miami on the highway, so how do I handle the different speeds/revs/etc?
Anyone done this?
When I gor my brand new BMW 5 years ago, I had to take it the next day to work (50 miles away each way) and back to the house. I didn't do any revs variation or speeds, just trying not to get over 3K RPM's. after 140K miles, the engine is still strong.... but my power windows regulators failed too many times!!!! ; ) (Ask a E46 owner and you'll get it)
I can't wait to dump this BMW!
What to do with the IS??
Thanks!
Joel

Its simple, just try to vary the rpm's as you are on the highway.
Just every few seconds, go from 50 mph to about 70-75 mph..
then back down to 50mph.. Its just bad to keep the engine at
one constant rpm range for too long during the break in period..
Why did you buy the car from Clearwater?

If you search you'll find other threads, this is a popular topic, and very controversial.
My suggestion is to simply to try to vary your speeds and loads as much as possible. If you use the shift-it-yourself mode, you can even switch between say fifth and sixth gears at the same road speed.
As for your BMW and it's 140,000 mile engine despite not following break-in recommendations: the most likely result of improper break-in is an increase in oil consumption, not catastrophic failure.

Don't feel bad, I'll be driving mine from MA to VA... 550 miles.
Just use sport shift mode and vary the rpms and load using the top few gears, as mentioned. Slow down under engine braking, then speed back up, etc.

I had the same concern with my car. I picked up my car in St Louis and I live in Orlando. It was exactly 1001 miles from door to door. I just varied the rpms on the engine using the eshift, going back and forth from 6th to 5th and made it fine. It was a blast to drive and I made it back in 15 hours. So far no problems, no abnormal oil consumption and I am getting great gas mileage. Just have fun with it and watch out for falling/flying debris from trucks to avoid paint chips and you will be ok.

Why from them? They wouldn't give a deal nearly as good as I got from Ira. They spent a good deal of time with me too.

I'll be picking up my IS350 at Torrance in about a week. I'll be driving around 450miles back home. I'm planning on driving during rush hour when traffic is stop and go. As for highway 5 (one long straight highway) I'll probably vary my speeds from 65-80mpg.

They're claiming end of march, but my suspicion is more likely mid April (order was accepted at the factory end of Jan).
