I can get 29 if I don’t accelerate quickly and drive a little slower. If you drive it like a regular car you’ll get 20-23.

Wow, that’s REALLY low! Is the car running off battery at speeds under 40 mph or at stoplights? It takes a bit for the car to break in & the mpg will go up a little. Are you sitting idling for long periods of time?

I’ve never gotten 29 mpg or higher & I don’t drive it like a regular car. I’ve hit 28 once or twice, but all the planets had to line up perfectly. The car is consistently in the mid twenties, no matter who drives it. Toyota exaggerates their mpg to where most people don’t regularly get the advertised mpg. Most of GM & VW underestimate their mpg & people tend to get more mpg than what’s advertised.

all car manufacturers list their best possible mpg. Nothing new here.

That is very low indeed. I get between 28 and 32 calculated, mostly rural driving from 35 to 50 speeds with plenty of traffic signals - with an occasional/rare stretch of 65 mph interstate. I drive in Eco mode pretty much all the time. I also have experience with the hybrid drivetrain as this is my sixth. Mostly I drive very normally, but I do practice the pulse and glide technique when practical. (https://www.metrompg.com/posts/pulse-and-glide.htm) This example suggest pulsing at higher speeds but I only do it on 35 MPH streets and only when there isn’t anyone around to annoy (which admittedly isn’t that often with the recent explosive growth around me).

The takeaway here is that it is possible to get the posted mileage on my 450h. I suspect driving style has something to do with the mileage one can achieve, but I also wouldn’t doubt that there is some variation from one RX to the next.

Default It's the EPA. not Toyota

The EPA sets the mileage estimate, not the manufacturer!

If you're not getting the EPA estimate - especially on the highway - the most likely reason is your driving style.

Can't wait to share my findings with you:
My car 450hl performed exactly like your car on the first tank of gas. I was also confused until today I reset the ecu. Huge improvement! (Method: unplug the negative pole of the battery for 30 minutes) I can already achieve the same mpg as others. Of course, this time is still relatively short. I am not completely sure if this is a dream, but I can clearly feel the difference from the previous one. Now at low speeds, the battery is more involved! It's currently 35mpg!

I hope most people didn’t buy this with the expectations of getting great mileage. For a vehicle that weighs almost 5000 lbs it’s not bad but shoot, my daughters 2018 Honda Pilot Touring with over 60k miles gets 27 mpg.

I think they should expect to get about 30 with proper driving and respectable conditions. Basically what the MPG rating is. People of course can get less with bad driving and/or bad conditions. But getting more, for anything other than really small trips, wouldn't be a reasonable expectation for any car. My best tank has been 32, and I've had a 50 mile round trip come in at 35 once, but over a tank it's always 29-31 depending.

I'll be anxious to see what my new NX 350h can do once it arrives. Whenever that is

I just did a 180 mile round trip yesterday. It was sunny, 90+ degrees, with a light breeze. My tire pressures were 33 psi. The average speed limit is 75 mph & there were some flat areas & some gently rolling hills. I set my cruise at 75 in ECO mode. My average mpg was 26. There’s no driving style at highway speeds with the cruise engaged. My 450h has never hit 30 mpg, no matter who was driving.

With these type of testing parameters I doubt ever being able to duplicate the EPA numbers

2020 RX450h fill up at 9,077 miles 10/4/22. Traveled 448.8 miles, 100% city short trips mostly 14 miles each way, 0% highway, weather mostly 70F to 85F.
31.0 mpg calculated. The RX said 30.9 mpg. Filled up with Sam's Club Premium 93 Octane.

Try my method, reset the ecu. However, I think that the main impact after the reset is low-speed driving, and the participation of the battery is greatly improved.
Also my tires are 36psi
Cruising speed 70. Can do 28-30mpg. In urban areas, you can sometimes do 35, and sometimes 30. You must drive slowly.
Before the reset, the best I could get was 25mpg in the city.
