I found the limitations on USB music in the GX to be so utterly frustrating that I bought a used Gen 8 iPod Nano 16gb off eBay and a very short left 90 degree angle usb to 90 degree lightning cable.

That generation iPod Nano lays perfectly flat on the bottom of the usb connection compartment and I have it secured there with a bit of Velcro. With the 90 degree angle usb cable, that compartment door easily closes, I can still use Bluetooth on my phone for music if I choose and I have full functionality of playlists, id3 tags, easy artist browsing and embedded albums art through the iPod.

I can still connect my iPhone to charge with the other usb connection and my phone will still sit diagonally in the compartment just like it would prior to laying the Nano in there.

Having a '15 I can't speak of the newer models. But, I have not read of any improvements to the system.

Got it and yes the ID3 tags must be set in order to browse by song, artist, and album.

I feel the same way and I don't even own a GX yet. It's sort of sad that you have to buy an iPod which as been discontinued since 2017 as a solution to provide adequate functionality to sorting/organizing music the way you prefer to play it. I've typically found the quality of music via Bluetooth to not be as good so that's not an option I would prefer to explore. I also don't like tying up my phone for that task should I need it in a pinch. That all said, I use a Grom adapter in my 2005 Tacoma that provides essentially the same functionality listed here on a 2020+ model. Does anyone know if Grom makes a unit for the GX that provides enhanced functionality to playing MP3s?

Right, that would be my understanding as well.
