WTF? I am so pissed off. Ive seen this also on some 4runners. Ive had several vehicles many years old with no rust underneath at all and I check today and sure enough, some rust on the rear axle and in front suspension arms. Do any of you have this issue? I checked the lexus warranty and it is unclear whether this is covered. All comments welcome. Please check under your gx. This is NOT acceptable. I will post pics below

There is no rust on mine, but there wasn't a winter here in Vancouver so it's really hard to say if rust will develop under normal winter conditions. I understand you folks had a pretty harsh winter in the east coast, so salt could be one of the factors. I believe corrosion (rust) is covered under warranty so do talk to Lexus about it.

 

I've seen this on vehicles a long time in port, or exposed to the elements in shipping. Did you check when you received the truck? Maybe has been there awhile....

 

My had the same thing before I sold it. I live in NC so no bad winters. Exposure in the shipment had to be cause or the steal is no correctly protected

 

Every vehicle is due for some rust here and there but this is way too much and too soon! Are you near the ocean?

Not as much as you do but yes. After a while it will probably look the same. For comparison I checked my father 3 years old MB GL450 nothing.

 

i just did a parts search. its the rear axle housing and some bolts that are rusted. on toyota parts website, costs about $800, on lexus costs about $1200. not sure how critical this is to integrity of vehicle as it houses the axle shaft. also the hub is rusted on both sides, about 370 each..

 

I'm planning to visit dealer over the weekend. Let's see what they say.

folks, ive never driven on the beach. and in winter its been thoroughly cleaned several times after snow storm underneath. That avatar was cut and paste from the internet

i will be contacting a lawyer if they dont fix this. This is lexus, the "persuit of perfection". Well this aint perfection. Ive seen several other suvs without any rust underneath from different manufacters, all with solid rear axles.

i really curious what KOZ has to say about this. where are you?

 

Sell it to the stealer while you can get good $ for it while there is a shortage due to earthquake. My is gone. IMO the quality of GX is fair below to my GS so I hope this is not a trend for Lexus and just happen to GX. The vibs was my breaking point. Corrosion was there too, but I have assumed it is just surface and maybe normal. My 2006 4runner as well was correoded from the bottom, so thought it is a freebie option.

 

This is exactly what my reaction was in the Spring of 2005 after finishing my first winter with my then-new 2004 GX470 (and what a winter that was!). The GX had much more rust than I ever imagined it would (or should). It is, however, surface rust and should not have any significant effects on the structural integrity of the frame.

My dealer looked at it and basically told be that all Toyota trucks go through this. The one thing I did do every year or two, for what it's worth, was cleaning the tow hitch thoroughly and touching it up with gloss black Rust Oleum. It worked like a charm, and when we traded the truck after almost 6 years, the hitch (the only visible component that is prone to rust of a magnitude comparable to what the frame underneath can get) looked brand new.

I am curious as to whether your dealership will say anything different, but my guess is that they will not do anything.
