Celebrating Lexus & Toyota from Around the Globe
Most music sounded fine but I noticed that on certain songs the vocals tended to sound hollow and even slightly distorted. There was no combination of equalizer settings or changing surround setting that would mitigate it.
The issue became slightly more pronounced over time and I noticed it being worse but the change was so gradual that I didn't realize just how terrible it was until, finally, on a recent road trip my wife (who does not typically ride in th GX very often or for very long at a time) asked "Do you have a blown speaker or something?"
Well, turns out she was right. After researching as much as I could find, I opted to try to trouble shoot the individual speakers. The most likely culprit was the dash center speaker. It is also, buy far, the easiest to get to and replace. The foam on the speaker separating the cone from the fabric was completely deteriorated and the fabric was loose and flapping. I disconnected it and the sound problems were immediately better.
I knew the speaker needed to be replaced so I attempted to seal fabric back down with silicone sealant and tried it out. While it made an improvement, it certainly was not satisfactory so I removed the speaker again while I ordered and awaited the replacement part.
After much Googling, I was able to locate the part number and order it from a Lexus dealer online. The MSRP was about $185 but this dealer had a special and I got it for $166 shipped.
I just installed it and everything is exactly like it should be.
If you ML starts sounding worse than it should I recommend that you check that speaker. The design seems likely to fail given the heat that it could be subjected to baking in the sun. The center speaker grill just pops out with a standard panel tool and the speaker is held in by 2 screws with Phillips head/10mm. It takes, literally, less than a minute remove and less than another minute to replace.

I am not sure if this has been discussed before but I have a weird issue with my ML audio dvd system. The two from speakers don’t sound right, it literally sounds very faint and broker. All other speakers and subwoofer are working fine.
First I thought I the two speakers had gone bad so bought replacements but it still have the same issue. Tried changing the fuse as well. Anyone had this problem and if so what was the resolution.
The fix is identifying what materials are rattling when playing the bass. On 2022 GX460, thin steel plate which holds the fuel door opening mechanism was rattling against the ML sub enclosure. Entire cavity of the ML enclosure location was not isolated and there were no sound deadening materials nor any insulation materials on wires and plastic components. I basically installed Dynamatt on all surrounding metal cavity and secured all the wires with Tesa tapes.
Now the sub sounds tight and solid as it should be.
I've been just told by my sales rep that the premium plus package I've waited for a month is probably not gonna happen unless I go Luxury, which I'm not so interested in.
So most likely I'll have to settle in with the premium package but now I wonder how good is the ML audio package to the non ML audio.
Anyone please care to share your experience?
