I'm gonna say... not likely.... IMO.. someone did something here

Was this a Lexus dealer or an independent used car dealer? If Lexus dealer whoever traded it in.

What does service history via Lexus show?

I am using version 12 on a 2005 GX470. After you are connected with Techstream. Go to the body ecu, then utility, then customize, now wipers. If it is on available the rain sensing is on if not avail then the wipers should be intermittent.

I hate the thought of pulling down the headliner. So, any tips in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think so. Especially with Lexus, it is extremely in detail workmanship, will never leave things like that.

Might be a GX 470 only item there. I couldn't find it on mine under any of the Gateway, Main Body or others ECUs.

Thanks to all the great advice, I was able to located the sensor. It was tucked under the headliner.

The bracket to connect it to the windshield is gone.

Looks like the backing is also missing. I see the gel sticker can be bought. But what about the backing and mounting bracket?

is there a way to test this unit prior to buying the required parts?

regards.

The bigger problem is the windshield is different, Those black dots are absent from the sensor location on a rain sensor windshield. IMO you would have to extend wires and place on unobstructed area of windshield.

Ive had issues with the auto wipers not working since I got my used gx. the glass had been replaced to aftermarket and the sensor cover wouldnt hold the sensor tight to the glass.
ive fixed the same design on other toyotas. to get the cover right on those did require putting on the drivers side first then 'stretching' the cover over the other side.

in the case of my gx, the sensor cover push in lock was broken, there are little pointed arrow like tabs that did not engage and did not keep the lock in place.
the lock tightens the sensor to the glass and when locked holds it there.

the cover is about 30$ but i thought id try something free for now.

the tie is between the wires and the glass under the stem of the cover.
i left the end uncut so i can tighten in a few days after the stretch.
if i get it tighter then theres no metal mount visible.

although noticeable in the pic, once in the seat the mirror blocks most of the view anyways.

Thanks John, I never did anything else with mine and still have to push on it when it rains. I tried the tape mentioned, used 3M but not working. I like that wire tie method

the cable tie method works well so far. had rain the past few days and the auto works again.
i did also replace the sensor tape since it left residue when i removed it.

My entire metal bracket has finally un-glued itself from the windshield.

I re-glued over the old glue but that only lasted about a week. Need to clean all the glue off before I can attempt to re-mount.

But it was nice having the rain sensor for about a year and a half.

Over a year late on the reply, but correct - originally I didn't have the gel strip that goes in between the sensor and the windshield, so it was just hard plastic against the windshield. That ~$10.00 piece of gel brought my sensor back to life.
