Good afternoon. I just bought a brand new GX 460, drove it less than 900 miles home from CO to MT and the sunroof exploded on us an hour before we got home.
Thank God we had the visor closed and the weather was perfectly dry and sunny that particular day.
I googled it and found several comments about Lexus not covering this under warranty. More importantly, it doesn't appear anyone is taking this seriously. Does someone have to die before action is taken to correct these defective sunroofs?
Anyone with experience in dealing with this particular problem or how to have my voice be heard by someone that can do something, please chime in.
I have heard of this happening in vehicles but seems to occur on all makes and models. I don't recall this happening on a 460. I think someone had a rear window shatter.
Sorry to hear about your sunroof. Same thing happened to me on the highway. I thought a rock hit it. Glass coverage paid for a new sunroof at the Lexus dealer for me. Glad I had the visor closed as well. 2014 GX460 sunroof.
I’m guessing most manufacturers would label this as damage from road debris. At least until proven otherwise (i.e. an unusually high number of complaints)...
when theres pressure on the glass, on a hot day, turn on the AC and can break the glass. tempered glass.
usually happens wher theres teeny tiny chips, even if you cant see them
seen it even without using the AC

Yeah +1 on that. No warranty for this due to possible road debris. Also not a common problem that I have seen here. Guessing the fix is well-over $2K if done by the dealer.

Yes, this is something that is reported across all makes and models. I'd call Lexus corporate if the dealer balks, but you'll most likely have to go through your insurance company.
