Have you guys confirmed the mileage on the computer? I found my old 470's computer was always a few mpg overly optimistic.

That's impressive. I get 14.8 but given the hills of San Francisco, I'm actually fine with that number. It still only gets driven 6k a year after all so it doesn't cost me a ton.

I always check mine with a calculator, not the computer.

I'm more impressed with your mileage! Hilly urban driving has to be one of the worst situations for gas mileage so getting as much as you do is quite respectable.

The GX 460 is optimized for highway cruising as the top gear in [D]rive keeps the RPM's low ... great mileage although not a lot of torque. The GX 460 probably achieves its highest mileage without the use of cruise control by allowing the speed to drop on ascents rather than to force a downshift to maintain speed. I prefer to use the [S]port mode around town and to use the lever as a "shift limiter" to improve engine braking.

I use engine braking when towing but this engine/trans set-up does not provide much braking.

At best it is "vehicle slowing" ... a way to shed speed without touching the brake, but it is really better for "driving by throttle" ... using the accelerator pedal to control speed rather than having to use both pedals.

We drove into mid-town Philadelphia for a concert on Sunday night. [D]rive for the trip up and back I-95, [S]port 4 when we exited the interstate, [S]port 3 for stop and go at every red light on South Broad, [S]port 2 to climb the parking garage ramp and [S]port 1 when we left to descend the parking garage ramp. Alternatively, leave the GX 460 in [D]rive, but cover the brake pedal ... you will press it a lot!

If you're in bumper to bumper you can select the 2nd gear start option. It really works well for this!

technology is ever changing. in 2005, when CAN came out, it made everything alot easier to work on for us, not to mention it also shed plenty of vehicle weight... computers can now data log faster than they used to be able to with the obd2 setup, so o2 trims can swing faster now, yielding a much better fuel mileage.

Craig, I understand your logic and you are technically correct. However, all GX 460 owners can compare their mileage on the same basis by this display on their navigation screen. Even better, the display is for the 'trailing' 30 minutes, which is more useful than an instantaneous reading or a 'tankful' calculation.

On a long downhill run with my foot off the gas the GX will display instantaneous mileage values that are impressive, but unrealistic ... 99 MPG ... please! Likewise, stomp on the gas and the instantaneous mileage value heads toward zero! On the other extreme, calculating mileage each fillup using the elapsed mileage and the gallons to refill the tank results in repetitive values, unless our driving patterns change.

My point was that on sustained highway driving, which is where we cover the most ground as our speeds are higher, the GX 460 performs best. As "miles per dollar" is the more useful measure, isn't that where we want the best efficiency. Compare that to a hybrid, which can achieve impressive mileage, but in city driving ... how efficient is that when you aren't getting anywhere! ;-)

Default Gas mileage question

I'm curious what kind of gas mileage you get with the GX460. Thanks in advance.

17-18 MPG for roughly 50/50 city/highway driving.
