Default Best Rotors

Hello :-)

i have been struggling with front rotors warping at 10,000 miles… I’m pretty sure it is poor rotor quality…any other possible or known causes before I buy factory rotors? This is the 3rd set of supposedly own carquest and napa rotors. We used the same parts on our fj cruiser with flawless performance for 3 years now… the GX tho… not so much.

We are at 37k now on OEM rotors and no issues, you should be able to find aftermarket rotors that will work.

On our ML, I installed Brembo, as the OEM slotted and drilled would warp even with light driving around 10-15k miles. and no issues with the Brembo

Rotors typically don't warp, instead there is uneven distribution of brake pad material on the rotors which makes them thicker in certain places and causes the pulsation you feel. Research a brake pad bed in procedure and follow that to a T. That will clear the built up brake pad material on the rotors. Also brake a bit more aggressively in the future. Don't start slowing down 10,000ft before approaching a stop light.

^^ that ... to clean the rotor surface ... find a safe open straightaway road ... and from 70-mph do 2-3 panic stops ... where the ABS just begins to engage ... letting the rotors cool down for a few minutes in between. The pulsation should be completely eliminated ... or significantly reduced.

I always replace the rotors with new OEM purchased from a Lexus dealership when replacing the brake pads ... not aftermarket "OEM" ... and also never turn the rotors ... the fronts can be had direct from an on-line discount Lexus dealership for $70.00-odd per side ...

Warped as evidenced by a runout measurement or pulsing pedal? If the latter it could be uneven pad deposits. The former could also be from a non-flat rotor mating surface.

jonshonda is absolutely correct ... this is most likely due to pad material deposited on the rotors ... burn off these deposits before drawing any conclusion ... takes no effort other than some thrilling deceleration ... nothing to lose ...

^^ to the above ... braking technique is paramount ... late hard braking is not good ... generates too much heat, so reduces pad life ... long soft braking develops brake pad deposits on the rotors ... so ultimately results in brake pulsing. And abrupt final stops, meaning "gripping" at the last moment ... versus feathering off on the pedal when just coming to a complete stop ... does the rotors no favor in terms of maintaining even radial wear.

Going on over 30k miles on my heavy duty PowerStop rotors (and pads) and going strong. My OEM rotors lasted almost 154k miles. While the actual stopping power is lacking the OEM rotors ARE very high quality and robust.

... agree ... and specific to the OP's comment ... "aftermarket OEM" is not the same as "manufacturer (Lexus) OEM" ... yes, same exact physical specs ... but still not the exactly the same ... metallurgy ?

100% agree. The factory Toyota/Lexus OEM rotors are going to be the highest quality you can buy. I will say when I just added the heavy duty PowerStop brake pads on my factory rotors I did get an improvement over stock even with rotors that had ~150k miles on them.

This is what I plan on doing. Nice pads on OEM rotors.

They worked great when driving through the Rockies.

centric e coats are good rotors.
if you do get warping, look into the bolt torque process. this is what drives most warping.
