Here is my problem. Hoping y'all can help me out a little bit. The truck has been putting off a high squeal every time I crank the engine and when the A/C compressor is engaging.

My first idea was the accessory belt slipping on the compressor when its clutch kicked in. So I replaced the belt. The sound has dissipated a bit but is still there on initial start up and periodically while the A/C is on in the truck. If I turn the A/C button in the cab off the sound quits altogether.

My next idea is the A/C clutch. I prefer to work on my cars myself so does anyone know if you can just replace the clutch without doing the whole compressor? The compressor works amazing and the truck gets ice cold in the TX heat so if I can keep it while just doing the clutch that would be amazing.

Any ideas?

That link is dead for me. I haven't seen just the clutch by itself anywhere on the trusty internet. Hell at first I didn't even know if it was possible to do just the clutch. Although I found out I can do just the bearings as well and that looks to be the cheaper route so I think that'll be my next step.

 

It would be better with the DTC faults to know which component is faulty. Otherwise it will be a wild goose chase & $$$$

 

There are no fault codes to reference too. The dash indicates nothing and neither does a scan tool. The sound is coming from the a/c compressor, no doubt about that. It only happens when the A/C clutch engages. I already replaced the belt. Next will be the bearing. Unless there is a better idea out there.

You could also try dousing it with WD-40 or similar product to see if the clutch loosens up and starts working properly. I fixed a seized AC clutch with WD-40 and a hammer years back on a civic.

 

I planned on replacing the bearing last weekend, it ended up not happening. I did remove the clutch hub and cleaned the back of it. I also put a good coating of WD40 on it before putting it all back together. The sound has become less frequent. I don't really know what to do at this point I cannot pin point exactly where it is coming from beyond it beind in the compressor somewhere and specifically the whole clutch assembly. If I could figure out how to get too the snap rings in the clutch without having to remove the compressor I would just replace the whole assembly.

The Part above in the image( P/N 88410 ) is the Magnetic clutch, which is replaceable, but whether available is the question. Only thingy is you need to check which is the one you have as there are two type option available on the part site.

Thx mann, I have the pdf of a service/repair manuel. I have previously looked on Sewell at the part (88410) and they are available in the 250 - 300 price range just for the clutch. When I pulled the hub last weekend I just couldn't find a way to get the snap rings out without completely removing the compressor. I really don't want to have to evacuate the system and refill. I was hoping I could do it all without opening the lines. There just isn't enough clearance between the fan and the compressor to get a set of snap ring pliers in there.

I still wanna try doing just the bearing first, since i already have the part, and it would save me from having to buy a whole new clutch assembly.
